Rear shock - your thoughts?

I've been mulling over the rear shock on the 750 project that I am in the process of building. I'm opting for a mono shock as opposed to the standard twin. I'm using a ZX6R rear end and was thinking if I should stick with the standard ZX6R shock or whilst the bike is being built and I have the option of upgrading the shock to something newer than the 98 model does it warrant doing so?

I know that the 98 shock will more than likely give a better ride and handling than the aftermarket twin shocks that came with the project but is it worth spending more money on the rear shock and will I realistically notice any differences as in truth the chassis itself isn't cutting edge by today's standards

Your thoughts especially those that have done something similar build wise?

If you go wiith the mono shock youre going to need to weld in a good substantial top mount,possibly with some bracing. This in turn knocks your battery box and electrics out of place ,which leads to,relocating them (where?) and rewiring your loom to the new location.All of which is doable and many people have done it very well but it is a lot more work. On the other hand,if you go with the twin shock set up,you just need a couple of mounts welded on the swingarm. Like you say,the difference in handling is probably neither here nor there on such a bike but a lot of people prefer the one look or the other.
I went with the twin shocks as I like the look and It was the easier way to go.

On another subject,you seem to be starting a new thread with every question on your build. Why not just have one thread ( I hope thats the right terminology) that follows your whole build. Its easier for others to follow and nice to see the gradual progress.Also,other people that like what youre doing can scroll back and see how you did certain things. Just a thought.

That swing arm looks plenty tough. (I want one) I'd keep it as it is.

Hello buddy - with regards to the substantial bracing and top mount they have been sorted, I'm lucky enough to be able to get some 'left over' material from work. I know that the battery box was/is going to be a hurdle that will need climbing over, I'm waiting on a friend (pretty much a bike guru when it comes to engines and electrics) to talk about the possibility of a AGM battery (or similar) as I have a shed load of room under the rear cowl and it could happily fit there along with the other electrical components, however I have been told swapping to a non standard battery may affect it due to the charging system, this is where it becomes way too much for my brain to handle so i'm relying on his pearls of wisdom to see if it is at all possible?

The wiring loom isn't too much trouble for me as I have made 3 from scratch on past builds (albeit they were just basic) so I have all the parts left over from them, if I can get away with using the block connectors from the OE loom then I will.

Yes I did get the swingarm sorted and it's in my original thread....and that is the reason why I started a separate thread regarding this issue because folk don't bother reading the original sometimes (hint hint ) all jesting aside Davido cheers for the reply

cheers buddy, I want to get a few more bits sorted with regards to the build and take some photos etc and once I have a fair bit then I'll give you a nudge and we'll see if we can get a proper build thread going?

I'd bet real money that a pair of properly set up Ohlins shocks would out perform any stock monoshock out there.

Big money though.

Unless some of you riders are semi-pro, I'd bet 95% of us couldn't ride the bike fast enough with two "out of the box", stock Hi-Po S&Ws or Boge-Mullholand shocks to really tax them, let alone a pair of Ohlins or a race setup mono-shock.

Especially on a 750. The tires would give before they do.
