Just came to me ...that this bike were built back when the Speed Limit was 55.
So at 55 the Rpm should be around 2500 and 3000.
Yes little clutch drag to start but nice Rpm at 75-80 on the Hwy
Will check next on i get it on the road.
79 model in my Sig

It will lug at 2500. Roller bearing lower ends don't like that.

BTW, the speed limit was 55 in 76 if I remember right. God how I hated that. At 55 and the 16 tooth sprocket, I was and am at 3500 ROM.

Yea, the 55mph crapper came in 1974, and Nixon even wanted 50mph, and had other ideas to save fuel, such as no fuel sales on Sunday. Not the best days for travel. You could do 65mph if you were real careful looking for speed traps that were everywhere. Running a KZ1000 at 65mph was 3500-4000rpm give or take. Not too bad. I wouldn't want to run cross the country much faster on a KZ1000. They were built geared for the times I guess.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Re: Rpm at 70mpr
30 Jan 2015 21:35Nixon was such a frucking idiot. When people complained about the 55 speed limit, he said that he had instructed his pilot of Air Force One to fly 20% slower too. Then somebody pointed out that with air drag, that didn't save fuel it wasted it. Sometimes when I remember history, it's hard to believe it actually happened.RonKZ650 wrote: Yea, the 55mph crapper came in 1974, and Nixon even wanted 50mph, and had other ideas to save fuel, such as no fuel sales on Sunday. ...always seemed quite ironic that the 55 mph limit was a fuel saving measure, whilst petrol was very cheap and big block muscle cars popular.
In EU we used a fiscal cosh instead, just taxing petrol and diesel heavily.
OP think also throttle response, what is nice about these lite plus bikes is just a quarter of an inch on my right hand and warp speed fast forward a quarter of a mile . When you are at 5k the motor is just waking up and going onto main jet, you don't really want to be cogging down a couple of gears when you go into warp mode. Also there are times occasionally when you need to accelrate out of trouble fast.
In terms of engine wear and fuel consumption the motor is much happier and more efficient spinnng fast.

Less vibration at 3500 than at 5000.

I don't think the vibration is bad at all. I have done many 15+ hour days cruising along at 80 on my KZ1000 and it is no problem. Last summer i did Chicago to Denver in 17 hours on my 650 averaging 87.3 (whie in motion) with a indicated 6000 at 90 (+1 on front sprocket), the bike never struggled and ate up the milage no problem. It would be nice if there was a 6th gear though. On the 650 you can swap a 6 speed form a 550, I was wondering the other day if there were any 6 speed swaps for the 1000's
