What is this thing? was created by csarnese
This may be a dumb question, but what is this thing and is there anyway to make it less ugly? I just noticed it today. looked up imagines of other bikes and couldn't make it out on them. thanks

It's a brake line distribution block. It also houses the front brake pressure switch that activates the brake light. You can ditch it if you switch to a single long line but you'll lose the brake light activation unless you use another switch of some sort.

Some models have a fork cover emblem that kinda hides the brake joint.

On KZ bikes with dual disk front brakes it also serves as the splitter to connect the single brake line from the master cylinder to the two brake lines that go to the calipers. The unit on the dual disk equipped bikes is a little different than yours. Ed

Like Doug said; you can run a single line to the caliper, but you will loose the brake light switch. This is easily rectified with a brake light banjo bolt. Im not sure what the pitch the banjo is on the 400 master cylinder, so you will need to determine that. Its either 1.25 or 1.00

I use a switched banjo bolt for my rear, after changing to rear sets that Les Holt made me. The banjo bolt works well and I got it at the Kawasaki dealership for $15. My new front brake master cylinder has a switch built in.

Mine is a little different. The stock one like the one in question was in the wrong place for my lock on the forks. I don't recall what kind of bike this one came from being so many years ago and I had to use a double banjo for the line coming from the master cylinder to the right caliper. The other side leads to the left. I plan to buy a chrome Kawasaki fork cover to hide it but it's a low priority right now. The master cylinder is from a later model duel disk set up. The switch is built in.

I think it came off a Honda CB 500. Too bad Terry lost the wrecking yard. He had just about everything. He always wanted a Z1 and drooled over my bike. A KZ 1000 came in for service and I adjusted the valves etc. but he wouldn't pay me so I left. I'd stop by to get my money and the bike was still there month after month. He had written NO PARTS INSIDE on the engine cases. This guy thought he could keep it this way. His wife divorced him, through him out and everything was scrapped. Turns out the owner of the KZ was a cop. All that's left is a slab.
