I thought I'd post and update for this topic.
The workshop I sent the frame to fixed it (I guess, the easy way) by cutting away the bad parts and welding in new tubings with reinforcements. I believe the frame now has many more miles to go
The original spot with the hole
They did both sides as the other side had some thin spots

I haven't got the final price yet, as the workshop is doing some other work for me as well. Also, I live in Norway, and I don't believe the price would be comparable to the US.
What I was told is that the job required quite a few man hours, but I guess it is a whole lot cheaper than changing all the lower tubings that some other people suggested. I would consider this to be the easiest/cheapest and yet durable fix.

Not sure what you mean? With regards to not being legal on the street anymore? You guys don't have those laws in the US do you?
I would say a repair like this is in the grey zone, as the tubings have in a way only been reinforced and the frame dimensions has not been altered. Anyways as long as it is not visible on the frame the DMV will never know

i have a buddy in bergen i have done quite a bit of work for and he has told me it is very hard to get someone to do frame mods because of legal issues.
also very expensive if you can find someone willing to do it.

Ok, now I understand. I was quite amazed that you were so familiar with Norwegian law

I was told by the guy who did the mod that this was in fact not legal, like you say. So kudos for you for your knowledge. But he also told me that nobody will ever notice as long as it looks all original
