I invested in a little siphon feed sand blaster. It has become an indispensable tool fixing up these old bikes.

Try Arrow Plating in Texas. I haven't used them yet but I read good things and will be using them next. You should collect all of your old hardware and look for some period hardware lots on Ebay to add to it for extra.

Zinc plating for rusty bolts.

I used "gun kote" on my engine covers after sandblasting.
It's just about black and is the toughest stuff you can ever find.
Heat? no bother,,
Dirt? wont stick,,
Oil? wipes off and makes it shinny,,

Its what the US mil. puts on its air cooled weapons.

Where do you find the gun-kote....tried my local NAPA they didn't know about it.

I found it online at a few places but there is some responses on other forums and people who have used it having issues with the epoxy resin that is in it reacting with UV light. Any thoughts on this?

I bought the POR15 rust preventative paint and two 220z cans of the spray on chassis paint from my local Wesco store and they loved the stuff. I am painting my frame and other parts this week as soon as I get all my sandblasting done.

I painted my engine cases with the KG gunkote and am very satisfied with the results, however the engine has never really seen the sun as i haven't finished the bike yet. all coatings/paints are susceptible to UV damage, some just take longer than others. even UV resistant epoxies will break down after 50+ years of constant exposure. im curious to see the forums you found where they are having trouble with UV exposure, as I have yet to find any negative reports on the gun kote where the surface was prepared as per the manufacturers directions (either sandblasted or applied over anodization for aluminum)

BTW you can buy gun Kote straight from KG coatings, or you might have luck at a specialty gun shop. DO NOT buy the brownells gun kote aersol can. its not the same.

also when you bake it on, don't do it in your kitchen oven the black and green have lead in them. not something you want with your food.

Oh yeah, I forgot, IT JUST ABOUT MAKES YOUR PLACE UNLIVABLE,
It stinks when you cure it in a home oven.

It looks like they now make an air cure one also.

I would look for an electric oven on freecycle.org, use it in the back yard then recycle it.

Does anyone know if you can still get it in spray cans?
