Clicking while rolling

Hey all;
82 GPz750. When riding the bike, there is a clicking noise that gets slower/faster based on the speed of the bike. I can't tell if it's coming from the front or the back, and plan on trying to get a video of it but figured I'd ask first to see if this is common. It also doesn't do it when pushing the bike. If it does, it may be too quiet then to notice. It' really only noticeable at above 15mph and sounds like there's a baseball card in the wheel somewhere.

Any ideas on what's going on here? Again, hoping to get a video this weekend. I don't have a GoPro or anything so little difficult to capture it. Hoping to have someone else around to listen and possible get video.

You may want to try this - take the bike on a very quiet street that has zero traffic. Run it up to about 25 - 30 mph, then click the tranny into neutral. While it is drifting, shut the engine off and listen for the clicking sound. With the engine off you should be able to pin down if the noise is coming from the front or rear of the bike. If the noise is gone when the engine is off it must be related to the engine. Ed

I want to say that in neutral while rolling it does click, but haven't shut off the motor to listen to where it's coming from. Sounds like the front, but not 100%.

If it is the front/back wheels, any ideas on what would cause it?

Sadly won't get to the bike until this weekend again so will try it out then.

Once you positively identify front or rear (and not the engine) you will be able to raise that tire off the ground and spin it while listening for the clicking. That should enable you to pin it down to the source. Ed

you need a new chain
if you take the master link off
you will find that the ends off the chain and probably that master are worn out
best to change asap
i wouldnt ride like that
if you do you run the risk of having it fail
then bunching up at the output sprocket and COMPLETELY DESTROYING
your entire bike and maybe your life

Or make sure the center stand isnt riding on the chain, common if you have a header and keep the center stand

I will check into these all. Hopefully don't need a new chain. I do have a 4-1 header and the center stand.

Looked at the center stand today and it was all chewed up pretty bad from the chain. Didn't have an oppurtunity to ride it today so couldn't try a before and after, but I took off the center stand for the time being. Hoping can ride some this weekend and hopefully the clicking is gone.

The fix for that is usually to bolt a piece of metal to a rear footpeg mount to keep the center stand pushed down away from the chain slightly

if you dont take a look at your chain you are gonna wish you had
if it breaks while riding
it can bunch up at the output and really DESTROY you entire bike
it takes like 8 minutes to inspect

What jeff says is very true, a new chain can cost as little as twenty bucks, replace it especially if its been rubbing

Please, purchase a quality o-ring or x-ring chain. If the sprockets show the slightest sign of wear, they should be changed as well. If your bike uses a 630 chain, convert to 530. A bit lighter unsprung weight and lots more choices of o-ring and x-ring chains around. Z1 Enterprises can set you up with the right stuff.
