Will these work like I think they will?
05 Dec 2012 18:45
Hey all, been a while since i have been on, with schooI and work. i have the chance to get a swing arm and shock from a 02 zx6.
Also the front end off the same bike, it includes forke tubes, trees, axle and bars, swing arm and shock For $150
I will be doing a front end swap on my 77 kz650b1 with it. (at least that's the plan)
I still have to find if I can get conversion bearings or if I need to swap the stems out but that's after I'm done posting.
I do have one question on swing arm, is this something I can use? I know I will need a custom spacers and maybe take off a little off edges on pivot to fit in my 650? Or ? I don't have it so I can't do any pre-measuring yet.
I also know this is mono shock and I might go that rout if I feel comfortable with my skills, but most likely will mount tabs like everyone else. Any advise is good by me! Should I by it or keep looking on for somthing else?

I hope to have some equipment in the future, that way I could help out in our custom builds.

So I picked up the 02 zx6 front end and decided that ill do frontend swap then move to the rear.
the zx6 stem is pressed in, is there a specific way to push it out? Through top of tree or bottom? Looks to me like it will come out top but I never swapped one so I want to see what others have done.

ZX11 and 12 you have to push the stem down a little so you can remove the clip, then push it out from the bottom. I haven't done a ZX6.

So here's a pic of the bottom tree with 2002 zX6 stem and my stock 77 650 stem removed from the tree
Zx6 stem is bigger diameter and i will need to make a bushing to fit the stock stem in there ,I think!
Hey les holt I'm going to pm you and maybe send my business your way, you have the stuff and experience, I have no way to machine parts so I'm stuck. ( what's new)!!
Anyone have any pointers or advise?
Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get the old roller bearings to work on bottom with zx6 stem and see what's up with the top bearing and if conversion is the way to go.
I did find these but not sure in I did the conversion right(77 650 to 2002 zx6)

Is the ZX6 stem aluminum or steel?
I just looked up the conversion bearings on All Balls and it appears you do have the correct numbers.
Is the ZX6 stem long enough to protrude far enough above the top clamp? The conversion bearings will let you bolt the stem in with no other mods, as long as it's long enough.

The zx6 is aluminum, the stock stem is 8-1/2inches long and zx6 is 9 inches. That's measuring from the stop where it's pressed in the stem, NOT total length. Threads start on the stock stem at 7-15/16 and the zx6 threads start at 7-15/16 ,the same for both ( thats also measuring for stem stop. i'm going out in a few to see if I can mock up something and get some more measuments. Ill get a few pics also
Thanks for confirming I had the right part numbers steell!

i have done a ton of front end conversions.
you can press it out from the top down through the bottom.
if you plan to have someone do the stem swap for you leave the stem in the zx triple.
i hold the triples in my lathe by the stem to machine the stem to use as a bushing sometimes.
if the stem is not there then it cost extra for setup time on the mill.
chances are the upper triple will need a bushing or machined to open it up they vary.
the nice thing about the way i do it,is it is a bolt in deal using the original type of bearings for your bike.
no conversion bearing number to remember or look back up.you just call z1e and tell them year of your bike and model they sell you new bearings you install them and your done.
thats my .02,

for the swingarm swap i mill the sides down so it fits in the frame(makes it nice if you ever want to go back stock)shorten the center spacer and make top hat style spacers to adapt to the kz bolt.
