ZX14 front end and rear end conversion carbonfiber
27 Mar 2012 16:28 - 27 Mar 2012 16:52
Hello everyone.
I have a 1978 KZ1000A2 that I am building up into a carbon fiber wrapped street fighter.
So... I always loved the looks of the ZX14 fork and wheels, so I just purchased a brand new ZX14 front end (fork, triples, brakes, wheels) and rear end (swing arm, wheels, brakes). Now comes the fun part of putting the entire thing together.
Question #1 is how is the best way to get my front end together? Can I use the ZX14 triples and stem or do I need to swap steering stems completely? Bering sizes?
Question #2 Does anyone have any ideas about how to mount the wider swingarm from a ZX14 to a 1978 KZ1000A2?
Some Pics of the Carbon fiber so far. More to come.
THANK YOU TO porchev914 FOR GIVING ME THE INSPIRATION TO DO A CARBON FIBER LOOK TO MY BIKE. REMEMBER THAT I AM JUST WRAPPING MY PARTS IN CARBON FIBER, porchev914 ACTUALLY MADE HIS OWN PARTS ENTIRELY OUT OF CARBON FIBER!!!
porchev914 YOU ARE THE KING!!!

i like the carbon fiber look how are you wrapping it?
as far as the front end swap I am still collecting parts using a zx7 front end alot of the zx stuff is the same part number so im not sure whats is the same size as what but I am pretty sure you will need to have your stem swapped out or turned down alot of guys on here have done it
ask Leon about the swingarm width he uses a zx6 swingarm mod thats pretty cool are you goin monoshock?? I know some of the larger ZX swingers are too wide to narrow down enough to fit withouut widening the frame and cutting the swingarm down
wish I could be more help my build thread has the zx6 swingarm conversion

Haven't seen a 14 tree and stem up close but most ZX forks I can just modify the stem to work on the KZ's and make new tree to suit, although, You can use the ZX top tree in some cases but it generally has to be modified to accept your gauges of choice and ign.
If you don't mind me asking how long are the 14 forks, from center of axle to top?
I see a lot of 14 wheels cheap but haven't seen many forks floating around.
Any questions buzz me.

To answer you Les the forks are 29.5" from the center of the axle to the top of the fork.
To answer you Leon, the swing arm pivot point is 10 1/4" to 10 3/8" in width.

I am wraping the parts in carbon fiber by painting my parts black, then mix an epoxi resin and coating the parts with the resin. Waiting till the resin gets tacky then placing carbon fiber fabric over the parts (it is exreamly difficult to lay the fabric without screwing up the weave)
Once you are happy you soak the dry carbon fiber with multiple coats of resin. You need to use a hairdryer to heat the resin(this remove air from the resin). I did about 4 coats of resin (sanding between coats with 800 grit). If you have suficient coverage you need to make Shure the surface is smooth and the shape that you desire. Sand the object with progressively finer grit sandpaper untill you get to 2000grit.
You then need to clear coat it with a uv blocker.
Yes it looks really cool....but....WoW WHAT A PAIN IN THE A$$.

They do look good

I put zx7 suspension on my 79LTD a few years ago. The swing arm was a challenge but it turned out good. Some build pics for you
Based on speaking to a friend who went the zx6 swing arm route, they're relatively close in width to the stock unit and don't require sever mods. I went the stem swap route for the trees.

the pivot on kz swingarms is 9 inches wide and the frame width inside is 9 1/4.
so if you are set on using the 14 arm you are goimng to have to do some surgery on something :pinch: .

Larry your bike is mint! I took a look at your build and am very impressed.
Where did you get the top triples from? Did you make them or did you get them made?

I thought that I would take some pics of the BRAND NEW ZX14 PARTS for you guys. Everything was purchased from Cory in Sarnia. If anyone needs ZX14 parts really cheap then please get in touch with me and I will be happy to send some more business to Cory. The parts are BRAND NEW not off wrecks, and he sells the BRAND NEW parts at the wrecked prices.
Here is his email cory.lacroix@sympatico.ca
