Mags on a 73 z1?
24 Jan 2011 10:42
Does anyone know if there is a simple "swap" from my stock wires (mine are crusty and the bike isn't stock anyway, so no "originality" worries here) to mags? I like my 19" front and 16" rear(original hub laced to 16" rim), but most of what I see has a disc set up for the rear and twin discs up front. I may eventually go that route, but for now just want something that will swap in easily. I noticed the early 80's KZ 550s came with drum rears, as did some of the KZ400/440/454s. Would those be a direct swap? I am running a single front disc and rear drum currently and don't want to convert the rear to disc or the front to dual disc yet (tight budget). Anyone had this issue before? My bike is a '73 Z1-900 running a stock hub laced to a 16" rim rear with drum brake and a 19" rim laced to a '76 KZ900 (4 bolt) hub and single disc currently.

Watch eBay and you'll eventually see a set of Lester mags for sale. Some were designed for the early Z1 series and had 19" fronts, 18" rear and were set up for a rear drum brake. They can be pricey at times, but at other times, reasonably priced...depending upon how many bidders there are.

16" rear drum with 19" single disk front mag wheels?
No problem, 1980 KZ750G, axle sizes are the same.
That's assuming that your 900 has the same diameter rear axle as the 77-80 KZ1000. That's 20mm.
I think I have a set.
Bummer, I see I type to slow
Optional dealer installed Morris mag wheel kit for the 79 KZ750 would work also, but they are pretty rare.

I would LOVE a set of Lesters. The only problem is that the set I found on Ebay last week drew over $800 for the set and they were kind rough. Needless to say, at that price for that condition, it doesn't seem a viable option for me. If anyone has a set of those 750 rims for sale, PM me. I'd be VERY interested in buying them. Thanks for all your help, guys!

'80-83 KZ550's had drum rear and single disc front. Standard "A model" 550 had 19Fr/18Rr and LTD "C model" had 19Fr/16Rr. If they arent a direct bolt-on I'm sure that they are very close to it. There should be plenty on ebay. Later LTD550's had shaft drive, so beware of that.

LTD 750 (twin) had single disc front and drum rear into the mid-1980s. They were 19 & 16 inch diameter. I'm not sure if they will fit, but might be worth looking into.
