kz to zx7 conversion part1
10 Apr 2006 15:58
Hello all i wanted to post some pics of the new front end going onto my kz650. I pressed out the my old stem and pressed it into a 96 zx7 triple. Actually i cut the zx7 stem and then used it as a spacer to press in the kz stem.
OD of KZ stem = ID of ZX7 stem.

Last night i welded a bead between ZX7 and KZ stem as an added bit of security.
The calipers are unfortunatly chromed. They came with the forks so i had no say in what they look like. It is a little too much bling for my taste.
The head bearings should be in within a few days and i will test fit these on the frame i have laying around.
Once again Z1 enterpries come through.
The rear is a whole other issue at the moment seeing as i am determined to fit a 6" wide rear wheel into a space that is not designed for such. As a side note for those KZ650 guys thinking about doing this conversion. A 4.5" rim will fit into a Suzuki GS swingarm with no problems. If you want a wider wheel to run a wider tire you will need a swingarm upgrade and an offset sproket. I will post more pics of these later.
I will post more pics as the parts come in.

I havent installed it yet due to the fact that i still have to machine the rear parts to get them to fit. Otherwise this is ready to be bolted on.

Well i decided to fit a 4.5" rim in the rear instead of the 6" i had planned. The reason is i dont thing the sprocket carrirer will be strong enough with that much material removed so as to fit the wheel. The front end is the easy part the rear isnt too bad but some machining is required.
To fit a 4.5" rim you will only need to machine 1/2" of the carrier and no front offset sprocket will be needed. That is why i chose this route. I will try to post pics of the machining as i do this. I have been somwhat sick for the past few months and so no progress has been made.
