i am new to the forum and also new to police kz1000 but am learning fast!i bought a 2001 kzpolice bike at a auction and i am sure it is geared for acceleration and not crusing and i have been reading for three days now in old forum disc.and have concluded after talking to z1enterprise(per you guys)i would like to change to a 16/37 @2.31 gear ratio or a 16/39 @2.43 i weigh around 250 lbs.any suggestions on what i may be better off with?i want to cruise at highway speeds without winding out but would also like to be able to accelerate heavely when needed.

Do some careful measurement for the engine(countershaft)sprocket if you can as 16 tooth may be close to the maximum size you can use there. I use www.gearingcommander.com to help figure chain speeds and sprocket sizes.

This is a ballpark: for a 250 lb rider, you can go maybe 10% lower on rear sprocket and have decent acceleration. That would lower cruise RPM by 10% below stock value.

My '82 kz1000 police bike's overall drive ratio is 4.924:1 in top gear (5th); seems to be a good compromise for high speed cruising and in-town use; I wouldn't mind a 6th gear, but not enough to change all the ratios. As it is, the off idle torque in 1st is nothing like a big v-twin, so you may be slipping the clutch more at starts (but you don't have to worry about riding 2-up); just some thoughts.

16t front sprockets are hard to find. I finally found one after almost a year. Now I have decided to convert to a 530 chain and sprockets. If you wish I can sell my brand new 16t J series front sprocket to you. It has never been mounted. The J series engine (which is what you have) has a different
spline from the earlier engines. I believe I paid $23 for the sprocket. I believe that the P bikes have a standard 630 chain and not a 530.

I am 220 and I had no problem with a 15/33 on a 76 900. The J motor has a lot more power and the gear ratio in the engine is also quite a bit closer spaced.

Z1 DOES NOT STOCK A 35TOOTH REAR BUT A 14 TOOTH FRONT AND A 33 REAR WILL BE REAL CLOSE TO YOUR RATIO.DO YOU THINK THAT WILL WORK?DO YOU RECALL YOUR RPM AT 60MPH?
