I just installed a new LED headlight on my 73 Z1.  The headlight has Day Running Lights (DRL) that also act as turn signals, turning amber when activated.  The new harness has the standard 3 prong plug the goes to the back of the headlight, a single wire to the left turn signal, single wire to the right turn signal, and a single wire for the DRL.  My question is where would I tie in the DRL wire since the 73 did not have day running lights?  Also, since the entire headlight unit is LED lights, will it work with non-led rear turn signals?  Thanks in advance!

For the Day Running Lights (DRL) you need a RH handle bar switch with an euro style switch (white PO position light switch position).
On the US RH handle bar switch the PO position is blacked out and not connected to the wiring harness.
LED turn signals need a load indepandent relay or a ballast resistor, due to the less power consumption (Current=Ampere).

Thanks Scirocco.  It so happens that I have the euro style RH switch you show here.  Had to replace my original many years ago.  Do I just need to tie into the PO wire?  According to my schematic the headlight switch has three wires red, blue and brown.  The PO position is the red and brown combination.

Don´t mix up the up the stock (euro) Z1 and LED head light color wiring!

Thanks again scirocco! Your wiring diagram matches mine, that’s a relief right there!  Are you thinking that the headlight DRL wire would tie into the switch red wire?  I will do some trial and error work tomorrow.

You can tap your DRL bulb into the blue for the that powers the tach and speedo light. Then use the green and gray for the built in turn signals

Thanks Mikaw, sounds like a plan!  At what location do you place the ballast resistor or independent relay?

If the headlight has a wiring schematic please post it.

If you go with a non-load sensing relay (electronic) it replaces the original but will also need an ignition live (three wires instead of two)

It did not come with a schematic.  It is a Sktyants 7” and can be found on several internet sights.  Like I mentioned in the original post it has the three prong for the headlight, two wires for the turn signals and one wire for the DRL.  Thanks for your help!

I am not great with electrical so excuse my ignorance.  My current relay is a MS50-611, 12 volt relay.  It has a post for the red from battery, black ground to engine.  I assumes this is the starter relay.    The turn signal relay is a 12 v 8-23wx2 Max 4 PCS.  It is a super winker JIN-YI flasher.  Which relay am I replacing with a non-loading sensing relay and what is the ignition live 3 wire?   Thanks!,
