Bike is stumbling intermittently around 4000 rpms and I decided to check the advancer.
I checked movement by hand and it's so dry it squeaks and squeals just rolling it forward and back.
I thought I'd take it all loose and lubricate it, but I can't get it off.
Is it right hand thread? I haven't read anything in detail about getting the bolt loose from the end of the crank.
I don't want to strip that. How much torque should that bolt have?
Is the bolt under it just to use to keep the crank from turning?

Wait till someone with an 1100 chimes in, but on the 550, the thread on the small hex is normal, and the 17mm larger nut below it is not a nut.  It is a hex shaped collar that is keyed to the advancer. It is not meant to turn, and is only for holding the crank (as you guessed).

Again, someone with an 1100 should be able to confirm this. Don't go by my info as it's only for 550's.  Many have stripped the bolt or the keyways on the larger nut. Then it's a mess.

It was a little rusty, but came off without to much struggle once I was confident I was turning it in the right direction.
Cleaned up, lubed and really made a difference in throttle response and smoothed it out significantly.

yeah that looks pretty good. One last thing to check are the tiny rubber pads that are glued onto the advance arms. They tend to fall off and are so small they can be overlooked as dirt or debris. They are needed for the proper amount of advance.
