Then what you want is the diagram for a 1980 Kz1000 B4, even if your bike was made in 1979. Unfortunately, the only diagram we have is the home-made version in Japanese:

www.kzrider.com/jdownloads/Fours/KZ1000/...JapaneseHomemade.gif

It does seem to show the reserve lighting unit.
In order to use that diagram, you will need to look at the similar Kz1000A3 that's posted in the filebase. But unfortunately it's a European diagram that does not have the reserve lighting unit, and has a resistor in the lighting wiring, which seems to be a European thing.

You might be able use the A3 diagram, and refer back to the Japanese diagram for when you come across differences on your actual bike. But you might have to translate some Japanese to get the reserve-lighting wiring colors.

You might also have better luck looking at 550 or 750 wiring diagrams. They might have similar reserve lighting and ignition wiring.

The 79 B3 was a points bike:

The B4, which probably started production in 1979, but is officially a 1980 model had the early electronic ignition version with the ballast resistor. You can get rid of the ballast resistor if you get coils that are 2.3 ohms or higher. You can use 2.3 ohm coils or 3 ohm coils. If you use coils less than 2 ohms, you should keep the ballast resistor.

TwoCam thanks for the help looks like the '79 1000 std is the closest but my gauges don't have the fuel gauge.

Loudhvx, well maybe you cracked the code. I must have an '80 vintage. Here's why I'm asking. I'm currently doing a frame off restoration on an A4. To get parts cheep I look at parts lots that mistakenly identify parts I need and thus get them cheep. In the process of such accusations I have acquired enough parts to assemble a bike using a titled '77 LTD frame. I assumed and was told That i had 90% electrical parts from a '79. The goll is to get the Frankenstein bike mechanically sound and sell it to fund the A4 project. I'm going to market the bike as a '77 LTD with upgraded '79 parts. I'm not going to mislead a buyer.

So I'm on the hunt for an '80 Wiring schematic. Now the question is do I need a A or B.

Well, in that case, I would just ignore the reserve lighting unit. It's a lot of extra wires going back and forth. Just wire it like the older KZ's with using the normal High-Low switch.

For the ignition, just measure the coil's primary resistance (the small wire connectors). If it's less than 2.2 ohms, keep the ballast resistor. The rest wires up the same as any other KZ using the early electronic ignition.

Good luck Dr. Frankenstein. :)
