Replaced voltage regulator causes new problems
26 Sep 2016 12:39
1974 900Z1A
Was blowing headlights so determined the voltage was too high out of the regulator. Replaced the regulator with unit which also eliminates the rectifier as well. Started once and was generating the proper voltage. Next day engiine wouldn't start. Battery good, fuel nor the problem. I am assuming weak or zero spark as everything else is good. Is there another component which tends to fail after voltage regulator replaced? The engine turns over but will not fire. I'm new to the forum. Hope I'm using it appropriately. Can anyone help me? Cheers, George

Hi Swest,
Not sure if this is where I reply to your answer to my post. Thanks so much for the detailed diagram. It appears that I've made all the connections properly. One issue is that there wasn't a sixth (brown) wire coming from the new unit. Also there was a black wire in the white block coming from the rectifier. Ground I assumed. But coming from the rectifier there was also a white wire which was tied into the red (hot) wire going to the fuse and then the battery. This white wire also
continued on out of the enclosure. Not sure what it is for but since it was paired with the hot one before I left it there.
So, just to confirm. I disconnected the three yellows from the old rectifier, paired them with the yellows from the new unit and plugged the white block back in its usual place. The white disappearing through the steel enclosure inboard was connected once again to red leading to the fuse and battery. Because the black gloing to the white plug was ground I didn't use it since the black from the new unit went directly to the -tive side of te battery.
I'll attach a a photo showing showing the old regulator removed but the yellow wires still in place.
Hope this makes sense.
Once again, it seems that iginition is the problem. Fuel is present, battery and starter very robust.
Thanks again. Anything more you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.
George

Like to see a pic of the whole setup. Power to the coils? It's possible the overcharging has damaged them.

Don't know if points or Dyna S. Can overvoltage from a blown regulator damage a Dyna S?

If points the condensers could be shot. I ruined a Dyna S when my positive cable broke off.

Hey Gents,
Thanks to Swest, Oldkawman and Steve. Went back over connections as per diagram. Must have jiggled something into place or got some mojo from the Forum. Fired up nicely with proper voltage through rev range. Still glad I signed up, Good to know I was on the right track. Will print out oldkawman's artwork and glue it in my log book for another time.
Thanks again.

I got Forum help last week checking that the new regulator/rectifier had been installed properly on my 74 900 Z1A. I had been blowing headlight bulbs and it seemed to be from voltage spiking over 15vdc. With new unit installed and voltage within parameters bulbs are still blowing. Any ideas? Thanks, George

Unknown, but the only time I encountered a similar incident is when the thinner black wire from my black negative lead on the battery ...connected to engine case ground, mysteriously became corroded.
