Timing dynatek ignition on kz750 twin
19 Apr 2016 20:45
So i am seeking help from those who have installed the kz650 ignition on their twin. I want to make sure the rotor plate is perfectly timed. I have seen pics of these things mounted so many different directions i'm finding it hard to discover the perfect timing. The inspection hole on the plate provided doesn't match with the hole on the stock plate because of the way it is mounted. I am looking to do this to rule out my misfire issue. If anyone has a reference that can post a pic of what they have set their timing to with the single dynatek pickup that would be great! thanks.

applying what the kawasaki manual says about timing the points system to how the dynatek ignition works i would need to align the dot on the rotor button (which is technically a small magnet) just past the middle of the pickup. While the mark on the timing advancer says right at top dead center.(f mark aligns with the mark on the stock timing plate)
please if anyone can, verify this. Thanks

Sounds to me like you're trying to adapt something meant for a different engine. All I will say is normally the Dyna is timed at full advance then you lower the idle to check low speed timing.

Yes, it is meant for a 4 cylinder but it's been a successful modification for a lot of people, i just never timed mine right. from what i have read most say you need to elongate the advance adjustment holes to get the proper timing since technically its not meant to be mounted how you must to make it work. So unfortunately timing it with the method is not applicable to this situation. ![:/ :/](/irritated.gif)
I really appreciate the response!

something to try;
get the timing close while the bike is off then with the bike idling move the timing plate while holding a timing light on the advance r until the marks line up. I had a kz400 that would not get the correct timing set if i followed the manual and found this was the only way to get an accurate time.

You must still use a timing advance mechanism for a twin because the cranks turn opposite of the fours.
With that, you will time it the same way you would with points, but using voltage instead of continuity.
With ignition power on:
With a voltmeter on the negative side of the coil, that is the side the Dyna S is connected to, it should read low, near 1 volt or so, when the magnet is away from the pickup. Then it should read battery voltage, around 12v, when the magnet is aligned with the pickup.
Rotate the crank the opposite direction of the wheels (front and rear wheels of the bike) , so that the meter goes from 1v to 12v just as the F mark lines up with the pointer on the engine case. Adjust the position of the pickup as necessary to get that to happen.
Be aware, the coil is heating up anytime that voltmeter shows around 1v. Try to get the crank into a position so the voltage is 12v. That will let the coil be at rest. You don't want to cook the coil. So turn the power on when you think the magnet is lined up with the pickup. Make sure the spark is able to discharge. That means have the plug wires hooked to the plugn in the engine, or at least make sure there is a path for the electricity from one plug wire to the other. If not, you can damage the Dyna S or the coil.
Also, make sure the rubber stops are in place on the advancer arms. If not, you will have to use a different timing procedure.

Thank you so much man. That's exactly what I needed. Just one more question where is the timing mark on the case? Because when I was looking through the manual it was saying the reference mark was on the rotor plate but I can't find it there either. Also I have no rubber stoppers in my advancer whatsoever so I'm guessing that's bad. I'll look at the diagram and see if I can get them if not I'll as advancer to my junkyard list. These advancement springs seem pretty stretched to begin with. They move freely almost a 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch.

Thanks for the diagram! Now I see it! In my picture where it was copied makes it look like the line is pointing to the rotor plate. Thank you Patton, you , bounty hunter and loudhvx are always my saviors!
