No spark on my 2000 kz1000P was created by KZP1000 19
I recently purchased a 2000 KZ1000P with 18,000 miles. When I purchased the bike the motor was out of it so I never heard it run. The previous owner told me that he had it running prior to taking the motor out but he had to jump the coils to do it. Now that I got the motor back in i cannot get it to start. It will crank but not turn over ( no spark). I have not tried to jump the coils. All the electrical on the bike works including all the police lights and siren. I've replaced the IC ignitor ( with a used one), ignition switch, spark plugs and battery. I tested the pick up coils with a Ohms meter and those seem fine too. I by passed the kick stand switch. I used Deoxit cleaner and spent a day cleaning all the connections and I still can't get it to turn over. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You will have to measure the voltage on the positive side of the coils. Each coil has a wire that should be right at or near battery voltage. That is about 12v. It is usually red or yellow.

Then if both coils have 12v, you should measure what the voltage is on the other wire. That wire will be black for the coil that fires cylinders 1 and 4, and will be green for the coil that fires cylinders 2 and 3. Those wires will very briefly pulse to about 1v just before the coil fires, but if the crank is not moving, both should be the same voltage as the positive wire.

All measurements should be done with the meter's black wire on the battery's negative post.

It's been sitting awhile but I'm not sure how long.

Ok thanks. So if this test doesn't check out does it mean my coils are bad. From everything I've read on here it sounds like I just have a bad connection or a wire I forgot to reconnect when installing the motor. I've checked all the wires several times but cannot see anything that jumps out.

If you have an automotive timing light, Hook it up to your battery and clip it over your plug wire to see if you get the light flashing, same on the pickup coil wires. It should flash if they are working properly on black and green wire. Can you smell gas getting into the pipes after trying to start it? I would check the run stop switch, work it back and forth, check voltage with a meter going to switch and verify your coils get hot when the key is turned on. They have whats called a coil mod using a relay to bypass the wiring harness for powering up the coils without losing volts through the misc. connections back to coils. Bike gets full battery voltage using this mod and runs cleaner. If you not getting power to the coils, the coil modification is an easy way to get power to coils. I am sure you can search for it on this site. If you are not getting power to coils and cant find it, I will send you a diagram on how to set it up.

I have the relay set up. Over time the contacts and wiring become weak and this bypasses them. The timing light test is also good for locating a intermittent miss. You can find out if it's electrical or carbs that way. A steady flash on one wire but the miss shows up on the other, bad connection or HT lead.

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow. Someone suggested it could be the crank sensor? Does that make sense ?? I'm not a mechanic and this is my first bike project. Looks like I got in over my head on this one.

Steve I tried the wires both ways. Still no spark.

I described two tests. Which one did not work out?

If there is no voltage on the coils anywhere, then you have a wiring issue, or connector issue, or fuse blown, or switch issue,

If there is voltage on the positive side, but the green and black wires are near 1v or lower, there's a chance you have a wiring issue, or you have a shorted out igniter. (Or you have a wiring issue on the pickup wires, as in they are somehow crossed with positive voltage.)

I haven't done any of the tests suggested yet. Hopefully tomorrow. I was just getting ahead of myself that's all. Thanks for the great advice. There is a lot of knowledgeable people on this site. Hopefully i can find the problem. I'll check back tomorrow with my results. Thanks again.
