What Gauges will fit 1978 KZ750B Twin?

Hey Guys, Brand new, just registered. You seem to have a ton of info on these old bikes, helped me get my project running. I found this 1978 KZ750B twin on CL in non running condition for a song. I cleaned up the ignition (first experience with points), it was all out of whack. gap, timing, and he had the spring assembled wrong. Went through the carbs, needed the boots to seal, new battery. Now she is running. Now i can start on more of the running gear and aesthetics. Missing gauges, seat was crap, and could use beautifying all over. Some parts not original, sportster tank, weird handlebars with hard grips. No mirrors. Pretty good on rust and corrosion. Question is, These gauges. My options seem to be aftermarket cable driven gauges, finding the exact model year range twin stuff, or possibly fitting some other KZ model's gauges. My question is, the bracket should bolt up and the cables should match, what would stop me for bolting up say a gauge cluster from a kz440. Everything for the 750b specifically seems to be either expensive, junked, or both but i have found some of the other models more reasonably priced and in better condition. Barring that, what would be problems with bolting up an aftermarket gauge as long as the ratio matches? Thanks in advance guys.

Hi there. Here is a resource you really will find helpful partzilla.com Follow the links to locate your bike and the part yooure looking for and click away and partzilla tells you where the same part is used on other model/years. Your guages are swappable with a whack of models from 1976 to 1980 650s, 750s and 1000s

Depending on what your ultimate goals for the bike are, there are some really interesting aftermarket choices. Acewell is pretty popular....

And thanks for the quick reply. I am gonna totally check out that partzilla site. I can't decide what i want to do with her, Get it functional and ride, restore to stock, bob it, cafe racer (hipster I know). I already have a kz seat on the way, and I have done some cleaning and polishing. Other than getting her running, that is it so far. Also, what are these things worth in varying states of condition, I have the title.

Got a ways to go with this one. I don't look at resale value, just what it's worth to me. Get it running first, then spend what you can afford.

Just yesterday I wired up an Acewell 2856 to my wiring harness for my 76 750 Twin. So far so good. It replaces the whole instrument cluster with a pot 3" diameter by 1.5" tall. Doesn't have a light for the brake light failure but I can live without that.

Had to do a little jiggery pokery with a file and sandpaper to get the old stock nut that attaches to the wheel hub to fit on the new cable. Oddly the nut at the bottom of the old speedo cable seems to be 10mm and the one at the top is 11mm..

I have seen many ebay feasts where a guy stripped an old KZ750 twin and sold every nut and bolt down to the kickstand spring.

On my 1979 750 twin, the speedo is one that has 70 mph straight up (140 max) and the tach is 5k straight up (10k max).

Yrah, there does seem to be a lot on there, just seems they are wanting an inordinate amount of money for rusty junk. There are quite a few sets on there that are smash and dent going for over $100.

If you want to go stock you can have my old set for the cost of shippi ng. No speedo cable ignition switch or the mounting hardware, I'm using those. The inside of the glass has some shmutz on it (wtf?) and the pots could probably use a coat of paint. PM me if you are interested.
