More Speedo info! And not so good was created by missionkz
I just found out from a good reliable source (he has them, the stuff and the chops)... that the aftermarket Z1 speedo and tachs DO NOT fit the factory mid 70's instrument holder bracket cluster!! BUMMER!!
I'm bringing my extra cluster bracket tomo so he can show me.... :(

I was told by z1partsinc the Tach won't fit the stock holder and if I buy the pair, they will through it in for free. I'd like to see the differences. PLS post pics. It might be the hole pattern is different.

Throw a new bracket in!?? That would be good but is the new bracket modified or is it built for the aftermarket instruments?

I think they are trying to get me to buy the set. They have them posted by piece or as a set on eBay. Marketing again.

I purchased the speedo/tach set from z1parts. Although it is very good looking, the tach is crap. It jumps all over the place. the speedo worked great until you try to reset the trip, it jams and sometimes won't work at all. I have ordered many things from them and they have been pretty darn nice most of the time. These are re-pop and most likely the best THEY can get. I even replaced the tach cable bc it was old and questionable with no change.

Ouch. I sure as Hell don't need a bouncing needle... been fighting that for years.
This is getting uglier and uglier...
I'll take a couple pictures so you can see why the factory bracket will not allow the restro instruments to drop in... the two stud holes do line up but the box area where the gear set is and rear cover mounts to that L shaped tab, does not fit the factory casting.
I wonder if the aftermarket bracket is made by the same company as the instruments and therefore, fit?
The two instruments, at $320 plus shipping, is totally worthless though if they have needle bounce and all that.

They told me they have a money back guarantee. Might have to rethink this.

OK so I took two pictures of the two tachometers. The ones with the lamps installed is the reproduction one....
You can clearly see that the gear box drive assembly is much larger and rectangular in the repro clock. Notice how close the stamped box comes to the mounting stud.
The studs line up fine but that that larger rectangle shape makes it so it will not fit in the stock KZ instrument bracket.

Below is a close up of the aftermarket instrument mounting bracket, which assume is cast to fit either the factory clocks or reproduction.

So you would have to hog out the metal for it to fit.

If you still have the original gauges have you thought about having them refurbed? The place in the link below specializes in doing that. Ed
