You can make an igniter for about $40. I've been using this one for over 10 years:

Are you sure everything else is functioning?

He would have to buy new coils to use a Dyna S (which would be a slight downgrade). It has a 3-ohm lower limit on coil resistance. His stock coils would be 2.3 ohm, originally.Nessism wrote: Ignitors are readily available on ebay. Of course the 1000 version are about double the cost of the 750 model, and likely near identical, but that's another matter. Converting to something more modern, like a Dyna S, is also an option. It will work fine with your stock coils so all you need is the unit itself. Z1 Enterprises sells them.

But I called them And there is no way to hook it up without the IC iignitor
I want to keep the stock coils so should I jsut get another IC ignitor, and Add the MSd down the road,
or go for the dnya s?
Anyone trade the MSD for a Dyna S?

A suitable subtitute for the Kawasaki IC Igniter(A pricey item)
This will only work for bikes having the mechanical ignition advancer:
home.comcast.net/~loudgpz/GPZweb/Ignition/GPZgmHEImod.html
The man who came up with the idea(Loudhvx at www.kzrider.com ) has used this for many years on his GPz 550.

To build this replacement, you'll need two of the modules, colored wires,Aluminum mount plate(that will also be a heatsink) wire terminals,Diodes,Resistors, terminal mounting places for the components, wire strippers, and crimping tools for the terminals. I believe 18 gauge wire will work for this project, but 16 gauge will be better if higher current draw is expected. A soldering iron will be needed to solder the diodes and resistors in the circuits.
Wire Termination Insulation & Sizes
Terminal Insulation Color Wire Sizes
RED
22-18 gauge wire
BLUE
16-14 gauge wire
YELLOW
12-10 gauge wire
The ring terminal holes comes in many sizes, from #4 up to 1/2" in most cases, it's a matter of finding the tightest fitting hole to fit the fastener for the termination.
American Wire Gauge(AWG) is backwards to what many people think; that is 22 gauge is many times smaller than 10 gauge even though the number is bigger.

Heatshrink or soldered new wire tails to OEM Hitachi miniblock connectors would solve the wiring issue.
The factory Ic ignitors are pretty good, I'd google the part number and there are probably quite a few different kz / gpz / ltd bikes that you could find a used part from. Even 30 plus years old and they still seem to work ok. Dyna works good too on mine.

The original stock coils are the weak link in the Kawasaki electronic ignition as they do most of the hard work & they are now 30+ yrs old. Some say they weren't that great to begin with ---- not sure if that's true, but I'm pretty sure the Dyna coils produce a better spark.lucienmaier wrote: .....

I acquired the stuff to make the HEI unit but haven't put it together yet.
