I would prefer the stock coils, if they were brand new.

On building my own, what mods would have to happen to the instructions for my bike? 81 kz 1000 csr

Should be exactly the same. But you need to make sure it's the igniter that's bad, and the other stuff is working, of course. Do you get any spark at all? Have you ohmed out the pickups? They should be somewhere around 400 or 500 ohms.

yes,
I got spark on one coil. I sawped coils (both coils work)
swaps wires from the pickups and all works, the only thing that will not work is the green wire off the IC ignitor

That sounds about right. Looks like the igniter.

Yup, the only IC ignitor box failure I've had was just that same fault mode, dead on one side of the coils, perfect on the other.

Others have reported intermittent problems, for me it was on/off.

You say the green coil wire, you have tested this from IC box block connector to coil? A temporary jumper wire here between the two would eliminate any bad connection issues.

For easy IC ignition box, pick ups , coils, leads, caps and plugs in one easy step without using the starter, If you leave the ignition on, and remove the casing, sweep past the pick ups with a magnetic screwdriver tip and it will trick the IC into sparking the coil of whichever pickup you 'trick'.

In my opinion, the Dyna S would be a small step backward in technology. The problem is the excessive dwell. It runs the coils hotter than it needs to. The other problem is that the coil current is on even if the crankshaft is not turning, when the ignition is turned on. This can end in a melted coil.

But I'm not arguing against getting the Dyna S, especially for anyone running points, but I think the factory system is better. There are numerous reports of Dyna S's going belly up, but Dyna is a reputable company and really seems to help out their customers when trouble arises.
