Well here it is all done. It just won't work lol. With the stock ignitor i was getting spark on one side but not the other. Now Im getting no spark. Its like Im not getting any power to the module.
I've got a service manual on the way but does anybody know if i can check the power without having the module installed?

Do you have a photo showing all of the wires? I can't really see what those wires are connected to. It appears you have a red wire going to ground, but I don't know if that red wire is ground or not.
Also, how are your coils connected?
There is a way to check for spark before installing on the bike, if you have all of the components off the bike and want to check it on the shop table.
You will need the pickup plate, coils, and a battery, in addition to the igniter assembly..
Also, you should know that when checking for spark you must have a way for the spark to travel from one coil tower to the other (or one plug wire to the other). If not, you can damage the coils and/or the igniters.
If I get a chance, later, I will try to draw a table-top test circuit so you can test the whole thing without dealing with any wiring on the bike.

Here it is with labels. I just used mostly red wire because i ran out of black.
i connect it to the bike with the connectors from the old ignitor.

I added two new diagrams on how to bench test the circuit. One is with pickups, and one is without pickups or the adapter circuit.

Re: 1980 KZ1000 Shaft ignitor question
21 Feb 2014 11:25It's a little blury, but from what I can make out, the wires are connected properly.ChopFinger123 wrote: Here it is with labels. I just used mostly red wire because i ran out of black.

The only issue is which way are the diodes wired? There is a little stripe on one end of each diode, and they must be closer to the ground connection end.
When you check for spark, you are sure the high-tension path is able to complete itself? In other words, make sure the both plug wires from one coil can make a path to each other with about a 1/4" gap.

Well i never had time to mess with the GM ignition system so i just ordered a Dyna S with coils and wires included. (Not the one off ebay) I installed it and now Im getting good spark but its backfiring through the carbs and exhaust. Im thinking its the carb holders (intake sleeves). Not sure though ran out of time again. Maybe ill get this figured out soon.
Im ready to ride.

Does it only backfire?
Or does it run and backfire?
If it won't start at ll, and only backfires, you may have the igntiion rotor installed 180 degrees out of phase.

It only backfires. Ill have to check that rotor in the morning.
The reason Im thinkin the carb holders is because its blowing some fuel out around number 4 between it and the engine.
How can i seal that up if it is the carb holders?

Leaky carb holders should be replaced. Ed
