What's every one think of '78 kz1000 with ARD CDM Magneto on it, around 25k miles.
I saw bike for sale that has one.

Thanks

i wouldn't be scared of it.
if you can't get along with it you can always sell the mag for enough to put an electronic ignition on it.

I'm was just wondering as to why someone would have this on the bike versus stock ignition.
What are the advantages/disadvantages .
I'm still looking for a bike for my project and came across this 78' k1000 with 23k miles and this kind of magneto.
Asking price is $2500, bike seem to look good, at least from the pictures and supposedly is running good too.
It is about 2hr drive from me, have to make some time to go and see it.

back when points were more common a mag is a way to get hotter fire.

in other words you usually seen them with bikes that had higher compression ,or blowers.

mags used by "cool street racer dudes" or some on who needed a hotter spark blower ,turbo, high compression...... If it were my bike i would take the ard mag off and sell it, replace it with a Dyna S and coils/wires.......and pocket the extra dough :woohoo:

if the bike is mechanically sound , would not be too bad a deal.....

I spoke with the guy today, he had owned it for 5 years, that bike was used for drag/street racing but not by him, either by previous owner or who knows, back in the day.
Bike certainly does not look like its prepped for drag racing.
Another thing he mentioned is that the bike was lightened by drilling the brake rotors, i'm not sure if this guy knows whats he is talking about.
He does not know if the engine was modified supposedly runs good, there is a oil leak by the exhaust header, either from the valve cover or he said speedo cable, or maybe he meant tach sending unit as the speedo sender is on the front wheel i think.
Bike is registered, has clean title but its been blue tagged by Highway Patrol sometimes in its life, he bought it like that so maybe it was a theft recovery sometime in its past.
I'm going to try to get to Los Angeles this sunday if bike is still available.
He also said that he received a lot of calls about it but i think that the reason that he didn't sell it yet is because of his Drag/Street racing story. To most, that means that the bike was abused but it may not be.
If i get there i'll check the compression on it.
What should compression be if stock engine and what if hi compression?
I also found few more adds

Thanks guys

100 lbs of compression is low.
145 lbs of compression is normal(for most stock engines).

it basically takes 65lbs of compression to create combustion.
anything 2 or 4 stroke 100 lbs or lower needs rings at least.

thats my .02 fwiw,hth.
