You can snug them down, but be careful as you can do damage.
I know all about the Vetter in the way. I use a socket and an extension. But I made my mount.

That lower fairing really gets in the way, it also covers the spark plugs which is why I haven't looked at them yet. It will be very useful when the weather gets cool.

I'm with Daveo I didn't spend as much money as he did but the Dyna S and new coils has been worth every penny. It truly is a set it and forget it solution. With points you will always have to adjust them as because they wear down. Timing the bike with points always ended up with me cussing and I would rather spend that time riding. B)

That is going to be expensive. Do you have a timing light, or someone who has one and knows how to use it? The test itself is quite easy to perform and does not take very long. It is unfortunate that your "mechanic" did not take the time to do it for you.
If it is faulty, replacing the advance unit is also quite easy.

You're getting a lot of detonation? Can you describe what the problem is?

Well the detonation is mostly in higher gears, accelerating at low rpm. It sounds somewhat like the metal ball rattling inside a paint can when you shake it. Hey daveo, were you having this same issue before the new ignition? Did it improve low-rpm acceleration and fuel mileage?

If the ignition timing is not set correctly those symptoms can occur. All it takes is a timing light and service manual to check. Ed

Ok thanks I'll look into that. I have a timing light and I have used it on cars years ago, just have no idea how on motorcycles.

It's very easy. The manual will show how the timing marks should align. The timing light hooks to the battery and its inductive pickup hooks around a spark plug wire. Ed

OK thanks I imagined it would be easy, it was very simple with cars. I'm going to see if I can locate a manual at one of the local book stores. If I don't find one I'll look online.
