kz1000 no power
21 Aug 2012 12:01
I recently was given a 1980 kz1000 ltd from my uncle. Bike has run great for the past month, put about 1000 miles on it in the past few weeks.
Last night I got caught in a rain storm. Bike died and was tough to restart. Got it restarted and it died again. This time I noticed that my "push start button" was broken. It was taped previously apparently and I never noticed it. Now im in the middle of a highway and pushed the bike off to a gas station. At this point i still had my lights.
Got to the gas station to try to get the button in to just make it home(was only two miles from the house). I went into the gas station to grab a screw driver to get the spring alinged to get the button back in. When I did this I must have pushed the screwdriver in to far as I lost all power.
When i turn the ignition to on nothing happens no lights nothing.
My question is, what could this be? I have not been able to check fuses(happend last night and am working today). The bike has a aftermarket windjammer on it. Where would the fuses be located?
Also why would my bike have died in the rain and been tough to restart?
Lastly what part do I need to replace the "push start button" on the right handlebar.
This is my first bike so bare with me.
Thank you in advance for your help!

That's A real nice looking bike. The fuses should be under the left side cover. The switch might have gotten water in and shorted out.

the ignition switch or the "starter button" on the right handle bar? My fingers are crossed that its a fuse as everything went dead once I got the screwdrive inside the right handle bar where the start button is. Wish i would have tried to kick start it
Also where can I find a right handle bar switch with the "on off on" and the start button?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration
would this 5 prong work with my bike? He also has a 4 prong plug in that looks the exact same. My current switch does not have an on off for the lights?

Will do. There website is tough.
I ended up getting the bike going. 20 amp fuse was blown. Switched that and got power. Luckily my driveway is on a hill so i rode it down there to fire it up. Runs fine was a bit rough to start but smoothed out.
I can not figure out the start button even to just get it going with it. It has a spring and a button. Has anyone had one of these things apart? I cant figure out if I am missing a peice or if the thing is just shot.

well tried to play with the switch portion tonight. Dont want to get to far in without having another one here. Odd thing today, i kicked started it, it fired right up ran for about 20 seconds then died. Wont re-fire kick starting or roll starting down my driveway hill.
hoping that it just fired off with the fuel in the carb and i did not have the choke open far enough and it just died.
