H**** starter?
07 Sep 2011 10:29
Someone recently told me a starter from a DOHC cam Honda motor would bolt right into my KZ1000.
True? Any mods have to be done? Any particular model and year fits best?
Been having to use my kick starter for a while now. Could just be my battery though. Haven't had it tested yet, and it's the same bat that was in it when I bought it five years ago.
But I figure when it does come down to needing a new starter, I'd like to know my options.

The Honda starter is reportedly a little more robust, and fits certain Kawasaki models, with minimal modification needed (perhaps to provide slight additional clearance needed for the wiring lug??)
I recall there being at least one earlier thread about this subject here on KZr.
Good Fortune!

I believe that mark1122 has the CB starter on his bike due to the additional torque of the Honda starter. His stock KZ starter wouldn't reliably turn his 1200cc motor over.

the kawi starter is 7 amps/milliwatts/????
the honda starter is 9 amps/milliwatts/???????
what i can tell you from my experience (with a 1981 cb1100 starter on my 1015cc)is that the bike starts quicker and the engine turns over a LOT faster.
i had to clearance my countershaft cover to clear the power lug on the honda starter.some guys say you can take the starter apart and rotate the power lug out of the way.
i will only use the honda starters on my bikes as long as they are available.

Doesnt Kawi also make a "heavy duty" starter (STANDARD I think on the ELR bikes ) that also puts out 9 amps?bj

For a performance (high compression pistons/cams/head work) built engine, I get this but for a stock or mild built engine I would think the Kawi starter is more then adequate....
Hell in my mild build, one quick press of the starter and she pures to life...
Sure a starter can go bad especially after 30 years but I'd start looking at other possible solutions in your setup first such as electrical system & connections, electrical starter components, starter clutch mechanism... etc...
If any of the above mentioned is crap that extra 2amps will only buy you so much....

Sorry I didn't get back sooner but I was off yesterday and went riding. Beautiful day for it.
Went ahead and put a new battery in it. Turns out there ain't a damn thing wrong with the starter that's in there. Funny how the battery just kept going ang going all year with enough juice to fire the ignition, but not enough to crank it. Plus it would always read 12.5 volts. Been kick starting it all year. Always started on the first kick.
Now I have to get over the habit of toeing out my kick lever when I swing my leg over.
But when my starter does go, it's nice to know the Honda option.
