If you are going to take your bike up to 9000 rpms on a regular basis than a tach is what you need. If you are like me and tool around town with the ocasional hwy ride than I do not think it is all that important. The point is that it is situational. I have been riding twenty years and know what my bike sounds like when I need to shift into second gear and so on. If you do the engine work on your bike you come to know what it sounds like and it's performance capibilites.I guess I don't really careabout pushing the limits of the engine. I don't think if you are a smart rider you would do so on a reular basis for fear of blowing your engine or maybe a ticket.
I want to ride my bicycle!!!

Hmmm... ok. Outside the box a little.

Just get a rev limiter! Set it, and forget it.

Then you can bang the top as hard as you want, and never worry about damaging your engine, with or without a tach!
