If it were me, I'd carefully open up the left handlebar switch pod(watch out for flying springs and ball bearings)and then get some electrical contact cleaner. Spray and move the switch back and forth to clean it.
Do not use WD-40,brake cleaner or anything other than plastic safe electrical contact cleaner for this.
I use a brand called "De-Oxit" contact cleaner/preservative on my bike and home entertainment center patch cables.
It can be bought at Radio Shack Stores in the U.S.(a bit pricey as it sells for $15 for a two pack).

Thanks, the switch block is a replacement from Z1E and is only a couple of years old. I really don't have any suspicions there.

Maybe this will help... Left of contact breaker (points)
OMR - I hadn't broken out my diagram yet, but looking at that one, what are the two items that are next to the hazard relay in the top right of the diagram? They look like diode graphics to me, but I haven't ever seen anything that looks like a diode in the bike's wiring. Any thoughts?
