I got a 81' kz750 4cylinder and I am doing a complete rebuild on the motor with upgrades(83'gpz750 intake cam,83 gpz750 oil cooler, and small nesserary things), and was wondering if:
(1) - it would be worth upgrading to the Dyna-S DS2-2 ignition and a set of dyna 3.0ohm coils?
(2) - would i notice a big difference?
The way my bike is right now, It has electronic ignition with mechainical advance and stock coils.
Thanks Much,
Dave

Properly functioning stock Kawasaki (IC Igniter style) electronic ignition is in some ways superior to Dyna-S.
Likely unable to notice any seat-of-the-pants performance difference between them.

There are several discussions in other threads about the relative pro and cons, some of which is beyond my comprehension, but may boil down to the Dyna-S being more of a voltage hog at lower rpm (inherent in its relative simplicity as compared to the oem Kawasaki electronic ignition).

If it's working I would save $ and leave it alone.

Take a multimeter and read the primary side(small wires) of the coils with the wires disconnected, this will tell you what ohm range of coils you'll need(usually 3 ohm).
For a stronger spark, I'd suggest getting a set of the Dyna non resistive sparkplug wires and not use the sparkplug caps with the resistors at all.

What may make a difference is the coils, depending on the condition of the ones you have.
As already suggested measure the primary and secondary resistance and check the coils for cracks. Primary resistance should read 1.8 - 2.7 ohms, secondary should read 12 - 18 Kohms (12,000 - 18,000 ohms).
If resistance checks out and you haven't experienced any heat/moisture problems with your coils you should be all set with what you have - if you want to replace the coils with a set of Dyna coils anyway you would want the grey 2.2 ohm coils (DC4-1) and a set of Dyna plug wires.
Btw, the Dyna-S also use the stock mechanical advancer.

Thanks for the info. The coils on my bike are crap, had problems with them when I first got the bike running, but got them to work again, so I'll be replacing them with the dyna coils. As far as the ignition, the mechanical advancing unit is a little bit rusty, not terrible, and the one of the rubber dampers on the arm is cracked.
So I am thinking it needs to be changed. What do you guys think? And If I do, which way should I go, dyna vs stock, i believe their pretty close to the same price.
Thanks for helping,
Dave

Would clean and lube the advancer, and keep using it, including the cracked rubber damper....mechanical advancing unit is a little bit rusty, not terrible, and the one of the rubber dampers on the arm is cracked. So I am thinking it needs to be changed. What do you guys think?....
