kz440 timing advance unit problem was created by gabeb123
ok i have a 1982 kz440 and i broke my timing advance unit and finding a new one is proving to be very difficult but i was looking on ebay and i realized that i could find the timing advance unit for just about every other "kz" out their so my question is... would it be possible to use the timing advance off of any of the other "kz's"?

thanks

Best way to know is go to babbittsonline.com or bike bandit and use their OEM lookup by model year to get the part number for your advancer assembly. Then enter it in the cross ref finder and it will tell you what models it crosses to.

Using any other Kawasaki mechanical advancer might throw your ignition curve off resulting in unusual engine operations.

The KZ400/440 twins and 750 twins spin the opposite of the KZ inline-fours. You can't interchange the advancers and have them work properly. (They may fit mechanically, but when they spin, the advance won't work properly.)

The 440/400 and 750 twins may be swappable, but someone more familiar with them will know better. Steell?

Someone on the twins forum was parting out several of them a while ago.

According to kawasaki.com, advancer part no. 21148-1021
on 1982 kz440 is used on the following 9 models:

KZ440-A2 (LTD) (1981)
KZ440-A3 (LTD) (1982)
KZ440-A4 (LTD) (1983)
KZ440-B2 (1981)
KZ440-D2 (LTD Belt) (1981)
KZ440-D3 (LTD Belt) (1981)
KZ440-D4 (LTD Belt) (1982)
KZ440-D5 (LTD Belt) (1983)
KZ440-G1 (1982)

Would monitor ebay for this exact part number.

Advancers for other models (such as KZ400 and KZ750) have different part numbers.

Good Fortune! :)

thanks for all of the helpful responses. but are you sure that a 400 and a 440 are interchangeable because they look very different. the 440 has a lobe towards the top of it and the 400 doesn't appear to have one.

thanks

If you find a 400 with electronic ignition, then the advancers will interchange, but I haven't seen one.

82-84 KZ750 twin advancer will work, I've used both 440 and 750 electronic ignition advancers when converting older 750 twins to electronic ignition. 440 advancer allows 5 degrees more advance than the 750, but you could probably bend the stops out a little to get that extra 5 degrees if so desired.

I have a 440 advancer around here somewhere.

Never seen an electronic 400 myself, less someone converted it.

Ditto on what Steell said, using a 440 advancer currently on the 750 and it works fine. Have used a 750 one on a 440 before as well. I'm surprised you can't find an advancer for the 440, much more common machine than the 750 was.

I thought the mechanical advancers were basically the same for IC igniter or points, but only the rotor was sifferent. That's the part that moves. If the old rotor is ok, is there a chance he can just use a mech advancer from a points bike and swap on the reluctor-rotor? Or is the boss a different diam?
