ya the only timing advance unit i cant find that might be a electric ignition is one off of a 1981 kz750 e but i cant seem to find any info online about whether it is a electric ignition.

Forget it, there were no 81 750 twins, and the KZ750E is a four cylinder anyway. As is the KZ750H, and KZ750L.

Lou, if I recall correctly (and I don't always), a long time ago I tried putting a 440 electronic ignition rotor on the shaft of a 750 twin points ignition advancer, and it didn't fit. I don't know if it's a 750 vs 440 or points vs electronic though.

i dont think that that would work because i dont think that the advancer on a breaker point ignition is the same because it doesnt look like they have those little "pegs"(for lack of a better word) that move the rotor.

thanks

Interesting.

I know that on the KZ550's and KZ650's the points cams and electronic reluctor rotors will swap onto the same advancer mechanisms. Maybe the twins are different then.

The problem was shaft diameter, both have the notches for the arms.

I just bought a 82 KZ750M parts bike on eBay, from the pics it looks like the advancer is still there. If it is, and it's good, then I won't need the 440 advancer I have.

Ought to know by tomorrow evening.

Hello (im sorry for bringing back this old thread but i didnt see any rules against it) I went ahead and bought a timing advance unit out of a kz750 and it looks exactly the same as the old one (except in a lot better condition)now i am having problems getting it started. Does the way the lobe faces on the unit matter?

 Twin or 4 cylinder?

Including information about bike year and model may elicit better responses. And it's easy to put in your signature where it will automatically appear in posted messages.
When done, the signature information appears in all posts, past and future. And may be changed as often as desired.

Here's how to do it:

Yes. If it is 180 degrees out, the bike will be firing just before BDC when it should fire just before TDC.

On the four's, the pointer of the electronic ignitions should point more towards the "TEC" logo (green circle in Patton's photo). Perhaps the twins are the same.

Or you could just check to make sure the pistons are up near the top of their travel, then the point of the rotor should point toward the pickup.

When the rotor point aims at the 9 o'clock pickup module, the outside spark plugs are supposed to fire.
