All I want to do is know what I'm asking for when I go into the parts store.

Here goes:

The Relay Purchase; A Play In One Act And One Scene.

The scene is a local automotive supply store. Rider enters stage right and approaches one of the store clerks behind the counter.
Rider: Good morning, how you doing?
Clerk: Good morning sir. I'm doing fine. How you doing today?
Rider: Good. Thanks. I'm looking for a standard 12 Volt automotive type relay.
Clerk: Do you have a part number or model of car?
Rider: No and No. It's not for a car. It's for an older motorcycle.
Clerk: What do you want to use it for?
Rider: It's for some modifications I want to add to my motorcycle.
Clerk: Do you know what type of relay you want?
Rider: Yes. I'm looking for a standard automotive relay that is SPDT and that can carry about 30 to 40 Amps.
Clerk: What's SPDT? We only carry the standard components.
Rider: Don't worry. It will be written on the relay and we can check it out together. If not, it will have the diagram and we can check that out. So do you have any in stock.
Clerk: Do you want replacement stuff or Brand Name parts.
Rider: Depends! What's the difference in price between the two?
Clerk: Oh, about a dollar for the No-name stuff and about three to four dollars for the Brand Name parts. Which would you like?
Rider: Any come-backs on your cheap stuff?
Clerk: Some. Not too many.
Rider: How about the Brand Name parts.
Clerk: A lot less. I never actually had a comeback but I think one of the other guys may have. You know, electrical components can just fail.
Rider: Well... Bike. Night time failure. Pouring rain. I'm thinking Name Brand here.
Clerk: Yes sir. How many?
Rider: I'm thinking one... plus one spare.
Clerk: OK. Anything else?
Rider: Got any matching relay sockets for that relay.
Clerk: Yes. No-name or Name Brand?
Rider: Name Brand.
Clerk: OK. How many?
Rider: I'll take one. And add one more just in case I decide to do any other mods on my bike.
Clerk: Two relays and two sockets?
Rider: Yes, please.
Clerk: Yes sir. I'll be right back.
Clerk leaves and rummaging sounds are heard from the store room. He returns in two minutes with four separate sealed plastic bags in one hand and lays them on the counter.
Clerk: Are these the ones you need sir?
Rider: Well, let's have a look.
Rider removes a paper form his back pocket.

Rider proceeds to compare the two, moving from the paper to one of the bags containing the relay. He studies them intently, moving from one to the other several times. Then he looks up at the Clerk.
Rider: Well this one does not say SPDT on it… but I see that the diagram on the front has a pin 87 and a pin 87a. So pin 87 makes it a SPST, Single Pole Single Throw... but pin 87a bumps it up to a SPDT, Single Pole Double Throw.
Also, you see here... that both Pin 87 and Pin 87a are actually populated on the bottom of the relay... so that makes it a SPDT relay for sure. So, this is the one I need. Good stuff. What's the damage?
Clerk: What?
Rider: Sorry, how much will that be?
Clerk: Eight dollars and change before tax.
Clerk: Do you need the tool to remove the Relays Socket pins… to move the wires around to get the colour code the way you want or to add your own colour and gauge of wire... if you need to.
Rider: How much?
Clerk: About ten dollars.
Rider: So that's about twenty dollars in all. OK, I’ll take the tool also.
The clerk pulls the tool of the wall display behind him and presents it.
Clerk: We get no returns on these. They seem to work well.
Rider: OK, punch it in.
Clerk: Will that be Cash, Credit or Debit card?
Rider: Make that Debit card... I'm feeling lucky today.
Clerk: Do you want a bag with that?
Rider: Yes, thanks.
Clerk: Here's your bag and thank you.
Rider: You're welcome. Have a good one.
Clerk: Yes sir and you too.
Rider heads for the door and looks back at the clerk.
Rider: Looks like a good day for working outside on a bike.
Clerk: Yah. I need to tighten my chain.
Rider: Yah, good luck.
Clerk: And you.
Rider exits stage right.

End

Best of success, :)
Bill

PS
Just too much spare time on my hands for sure.
