the Dyna ignition consumes just over 6A. Alternators after 79 put out just over 19A pre 79 they put out about 12A

Thanks otakar, that will tell a lot of guy's what the aftermarket Ignition will draw. Sean here has Installed a 3 phase from a donor 550, or at least I think he did? So 19 AMPs should be the MAX Rated AMP output of the alternator.

I believe www.electrosport.com makes a overwound stator that will have a higher output at low rpm's(I'd check with them for the spec's).

IMHO, I would say MH is right on two counts. First, that 20 Amp would do and second that it is possibly vibration that killed the 3-year old relay and not heat due to current... but just a guess.

Remember, the specifications SHALL be printed on the component. The cheap relay I bought had the following printed on it:

NVF4-2C-Z40a
NO: 40A/14VDC
NC: 40A/14VDC
COIL DC12V
NHG

The "NHG" is just the manufacturer and "NVF4-2C-Z40a" is just the part number, so forget about those numbers.

Again, IMHO, the 40A is the important part. Also, as a rule-of-thumb it’s a good practice to run at only 50% of the rated value or less for long term reliability. The current draw should be less that 10 Amps so a 20 Amp or 40 Amp rated relay should, of course, do the job just fine and for a long time.

Best of success, :)
Bill

OK, great!

So Bill, let's say I walk into the O'Reilly's down the street from me ...

And remember, this is ME ......

What words need to come out of my mouth to cause the guy behind the counter to give over one of those relays?

A traditional automotive relay (in the standard package) with a 40A capacity should be an interesting find.

It would also be overkill (sounds like WG). If you follow the schematic, you will see this relay is not cycling with a load on it.

A simple 30A #87 differential relay (standard automotive relay throughout the 80s, 90s) will handle this job for years and years. I prefer Bosch, but won't hesitate to use another brand in a pinch.

Using good quality crimps, crimpers, cable and routing will ensure proper operation and full benefit of the mod.

Killing an afternoon going through electrical connections with a tube of dielectric grease and emery cloth would do wonders as well.

Yes 40AMP in the standard 5 1/4" male pins, even 2 pole is available. Just ask at a Auto store or online. Larger I have not seen, that's when such things like Stater solenoids are used, 100AMPs no prob.
Edit: Here is but 1 example;

Thanks Saki Jockey.

If I was to walk into the O'Reilly's down the street, what words would have to come out of my mouth to convince the counterman to give one of those Bosch ones over?

OK, I don't know what any of that means. What do I ask at an auto store or online?

Well it was meant for joe, but that's ok its your thread. So the standard relay the he referred to is a 4 or 5 pin automotive style. It will have male spade connectors coming out of the relay for connecting to. They are 1/4" male spade, you connect with a female of same size or preferably the mating relay socket.
The difference between a single and double pole relay is the 5 pin double pole verity will have the load connection at 2 1/4" male terminals at the same time when the relay closes. #87 & #87a connect to #30 on the bottom of the relay, a single pole will be just that, 30 to 87. A Bosch relay will also have the schematic of the relay printed on the side of it.
