but my coil resistance is 2.4 ohms. The 4ohm coils from Z1 are recommended for points bikes and the 1987 kz1000-P has electronic ignition. Would these OEM 2.4ohm coils be the right choice?

Or is there some logic to using higher resistance coils?
They are $90 each and I want to buy the right pair.
Z1 has a pair of Dyna 3ohm coils for $126. Will they work?
The Dyna coils sound attractive. Does anybody know if It's a good idea to run 3ohm coils on the 1987 electronic pick-ups with 2.4 ohm original coils? Z1 says "It is OK to select coils with a slightly higher resistance." Can anyone corroborate.

I wouldn't go any higher than 3-ohm coils, though. It is safe for the ignition to go higher ohms, but you may start to lose spark energy at higher RPMs.

The stock coils wer 2.2 Ohm and replacement coils are available either stock or Hi-performance from Dyna (gray coil) I run them in my GPZ and I love the Dyna coils. I run a .060 plug gap and 11:1 compression (1150) Z1E will also have the 2.2 Ohm Dyna coils Part #DC4-1. Just ask Larry. Here is a link to the Z1E page for your coils that you require for that bike.

Will those Dyna coils mount to the same bracket as the stock coils?

Being I have some information about electrical items and have built missile test equipment, I got some Glyptol(a high temperature isulating varnish) and painted the laminations ending the potential rust problem.
Coat the lams, let it dry, and then install the coils.

Going up from 2.4 Ohms to 4 Ohms would reduce the stored energy due to the shorter dwell time. As stated, it would show up most at very high RPM but I have no idea how pronounced the effect would be. Obviously, since Mother Kawi was already using 4 Ohm coils everywhere in the late 70's when the newer system was phased in, they probably would have stayed with 4 Ohms if they could and not suffer performance loss..... which means I would use the lower coil impedance designed for it. As for used coils off ebay: yeah, I went that route twice and just remember: you are replacing a 30 year old coil that has gone bad with another 30 year coil which is GOING to go bad....:laugh:but my coil resistance is 2.4 ohms. The 4ohm coils from Z1 are recommended for points bikes and the 1987 kz1000-P has electronic ignition.
