Hey Guys,
I wanted to change the gauges on my 1979 KZ1000ST to something newer,I have a set of Gauges from a 83GPZ (I think) and was wondering if anybody had done this swap and is it difficult. My gauges are mechanical and the GPZ gauges are electrical?

The Tach is electrical, and I believe it gets signals from the ignition coil(s) primary(small wire side). On some of the Kawasaki's,the speedometer was also electric. On my 82 GPz1100 B2 model, the speedometer is cable driven, so it can vary from year to year.

My GUESS is that the most difficult part of the swap would be finding a sending unit for the speedo that will work with your wheel/fork combo.
Might be much easier to send the orig units to Z1E for restoration.

The set of Gauges I have are from an 83 GPZ 750 and are completely electrical. Is there is a sensor or something that my Speedo Cable can plug into that would translate the signal to the electrical Speedo on the GPZ unit. I like this set of Gauges and think it would look cool on my older KZ.How did the GPZ unit get its speed signal? Was it from the wheel to a speed sensor or from somewhere else? Maybe it can be converted to fit my application ,Totally Custom.Just Thinking out loud here guys.Any Thoughts as to if this can be done. I have seen some old KZ's with custom gauges at shows and they looked pretty cool.

I found this online its for a car but maybe will work.I just don't know if the speedo will be true, I could live with it being off by 10 kph up or down.

Kawi's with electric speedo's had a sending unit that took the place of the driven gear at the front wheel. From there, wires went to the speedo. You can easily see it in the parts diagram for a 1982 LTD 1000

I havent ever seen that before......way awsome. That is a perfect idea for my kz 650. That is idenical to the stock speedo/tach set up on my gsxr 1000. Is that a shift light in the top right ontop of the speedo?

The tach is simple. I did it to mine when I lost my tach drive by using a GPZ head. The spedo, just pick up a GPZ spedo drive on eBay. i bought on for about $20. You might have to change your axle and wheel bearings dependent on if your bike uses the large or small axle to match the hole in the spedo drive.

I like the KOSO and available through Parts Unlimited, so dealers and ebay will have them. Wondering how the speed pick-up is accomplished.

If interested...ACEWELL Speedo's....
www.electrosport.com/street/speedometers.php

Speed sensing several ways... but most are inductive or magnetic pick ups...

If you research into OEM specs on newer bikes, they pick up or count cc sprocket tooth counts in the tranny gear box areas.

Easiest, magnet on the front rotor...

Tach, conductor soldered into a coil primary feed...
Speed... Provided rotor magnet and fab up a mounting bracket...
