Turn signal "mod", need help electricians. was created by Sweet Back
I'm running a 93 KZ1000P. I have some after market turn signals on the rear and what I would like to do is either A: Have them with "reverse polarity" so they are always on, then have them blink off when I use the signal, Or
B: Use a double filament bulb and have them always on, then blink brighter when I use the turn signal.

Which ever is easier to achieve. I've done some looking around but can't seeem to find anything on this. I'm sure somebody somewhere has done this. Anyone???

if you find some with dual filament you can wire one side in hot with your taillight B)

Bingo!

The two filament setups are nice for night, safer, and easy to setup. The always on filament is a circuit wired to any switched 12volt source, and the blink(brighter) filaments are wired thru your switch and the blinker relay. Almost the same as origional setup, except I like to have the always on in the rear as well.

Just have a look at your origional wiring diagram, and it should be easy to visualize.

Good luck, cheers.

Here's how I rewired my '82 KZ750 so that the turn signals operate both as turn signals and as running lights (I also changed the lenses to red).......

It required switching to dual filament sockets in the turn signal housings and using 1157 bulbs.

I'd be careful about having an amber running light if you're going to use the rear turn signal with a dual filiment bulb.

Check with the local police or highway patrol concerning rear running lights before wiring them up.

polkat,

Could you provide a link to your source for the OEM type RED Turn Signal Lens?

Thanks. :)

Another solution would be to use a 12 volt relay, with the flasher unit oprerating the coil, and power throught the normally closed contacts, out to the signal lights.

Bingo! A prize for that gentleman please.

Just a thought here... IMHO, two relays would be necessary. One for the right-rear flasher and one for the left-rear flasher. Each relay would function as a polarity reversal unit for its respective turn signal. When the left or right turn signal is selected and the flasher relay is OFF the respective Bulb would be powered ON. When the left or right turn signal is selected and the flasher relay is ON the respective Bulb would be powered OFF.

Also note that this circuit would meet the fail-to-safe circuit criteria such that if the flasher unit failed to the OFF or Short Circuit condition then both rear signals would stay in the ON condition.

It seems that a diagram would be necessary to better prove this circuit out and to best describe what needs to be changed, added and or deleted.

Best of success. :)

There was a comment on having an amber running light, it is ticket-able.

I got a couple two "filament" LED bulbs in RED and popped them (and the extra socket and wires) in my rear turn signal pods. So now I have an incandescent turn signal bulb and socket, and another two "light" LED bulb and socket per rear turn signal pod.

One is always on for the running (it glows RED), the other is hooked up to the brake circuit (it glows RED).

When the turn signals flash they still come out as amber.

Qdude, that is a neat solution.

Of course, you would need one relay for each circuit... unless it's the two prong type flasher... hmm. I need a wiring diagram.

"Use a double filament bulb and have them always on, then blink brighter when I use the turn signal. "...

Would probably be the easiest, no relay crap required....

You'll have 3 leads coming out of the lamp fixture....

1 for running light.
1 for turn signal lamp.
1 for ground...

For the running light, wire off the headlight power feed so it's switched on off in sequence with the headlight...

The other two are terminated OEM for operations....

Seems this would be your easiest way to go....;)

Is your turn signal lamp fixture have 3 leads or are you updating for a dual filament bulb?
