Ignition system on '77 kz650 was created by eaglecrash2
I have a 77 kz650 since new. Has 32k miles on it but recently brought it out of storage. Since one cable on the factory coil broke off I replaced both with Accel coils for CDI system as recommended by a Kawasaki tech. I had also replaced the points with a Martek 440 points when bike was new so the Tech said that I have a CDI system. With the Accel coils the bike ran well for 100 miles or so and then the left coil for no. 2 & 3 cyl crap out. Put on a good set of factory coils from a '78 kz650 and the left coil is still not functioning i.e. 2 & 3 cyclinders are not firing. I felt like the Accel coils were incorrect which might have ruined the Martek 440. Any advice? Should I replace with the Dyna S that i read elsewhere in this forum? Is the Martek 440 still available? Thanks for any help here.

i don't think the martek is available any more looks like your options are to replace it with a dyna ignition and i don't think the accels hurt the martek. ive had a couple of martek's thru the years and i think the marteks hurt the martek they wern't that good.

Which Dyna in particular will be appropriate for my bike. I can't wait to fix this darn thing so as to start riding again. Thanks

Thanks folks. I just ordered a Dyna s on line. I read the installation instructions and it's pretty straight forward. Will let you know the results.

usig the socalled "high performance" coils (which have a lower primary resistance than stock) will blow out some CD ignitions. The peak current being asked of the CD's storage capacitor is too high and the capacitor fails over time. Most CDI's will work well with stock coils assuming they are not blown out previously by a low impedance coil.

EC2, I ride a '77 KZ650-B1 and I installed Dyna S this summer. Works great. I don't know why I held out so long... must have been the money!

See my signature below for the part numbers of the Dyna S and matching Dyna coils I got from Z1 Ent.

Best of success. :)

Martek made CDI systems, but I'm pretty sure the Martek 440 is not CDI. As I said in the other thread, if you used low-resistance coils on the Martek 440, it may be blown.

Have you measured the resistance on the Accel coil's primary side?

Just had the chance to measure the Accel coils- one coil has 3.5ohms & the other has 0.8ohms on the primary. Both. secondary reads 11.5ohm. It's obvious one is shot.

Coil might indeed be shot, but am thinking coil primary ohm measurement is best made with wiring to both terminals being disconnected. That is to say, with both the battery positive wire and ignition signal wire both being disconnected. I could be wrong. :S

Good Luck! :)
