Removing tank rust

Hey what sould I use to remove minor fuel tank lining rust?

Do a search in the archives.
There are about half a dozen different ways to do it.

Very small steel ball bearings.

I do not bother with removing minor rust inside a tank. It's easier to clean the petcock screen and install a fuel filter and check periodically.

yep!

foot of chain.put inside and shake. then clean with acetone be fore lining.

P.S. make sure you put string on end of chain to remove and keep it from sticking inside

I used a foot of chain, taped up the holes, poured in a pint of tile&grout cleaner (phosphoric acid) and shook around. Use a coat hanger to fish out chain. Rinse with water then some light oil.

I like to use Muratic (spelling?) acid. 3/4 tank of water and the rest acid. Let it sit and hour then turn on each side a bit to let it get to the top of the tank. Don't tilt too far or the water/acid will come out of the fuel cap. Yes it will eat the paint if you leave it on there. I usually pour water over the tank as I am adding the acid just in case some splashes out. The acid will also etch the tank. Dry it out as fast as you can using a hairdryer or compressed air. After you drain it the tank will start to flash rust so the sooner you get it dry the better. I would stay away from the tank liners. I have heard many horror stories about them. I have my tank lined but It didn't take very well and it looks like crap. Unless you really know what you are doing it will cause more harm than good. Lite rust in the tank is not all that bad. Only bad part is that you can not see all parts of the tank so some areas might be worse than others. Clean it with some acid and add an in-line filter and you will be just fine. If you want to see the acind work first then find a metal or glass jar or something and fill it 3/4 water and 1/4 acid. Drop a rusty bolt in and let it sit for awhile. The jar or can will start to get hot as the acid reacts to the rust and metal. Take it out and then you will see how well it works. Later

Insert chain, nuts ,bolts etc,etc in tank. Wrap in blanket and insert in wifes dryer with no heat. Tumble until clean.
Do this when you are home alone.
And make sure there is no gas in tank. Roy
