How to read float valve numbers
22 Mar 2026 22:03
I'm close to getting my TC185 running right. What is still happening, is at WOT nearing top speed. the engine starts shutting off and back on at about 1 second intervals. If I back off the throttle a little, the engine runs fine. I'm thinking its starving for fuel. Internal carb parts look fairly new. Maybe a PO put in the wrong float valve. It's a Mikuni VM24.
My question is how to read the float valve numbers from JetsRus. Looking at the VM 26/26 valves, do the numbers in the parentheses represent how much fuel will flow through them?

Improved WOT running resulting from backing off the throttle indicates that the top end fueling is too rich and it's usually because the main jet is too large.

Perhaps if it Helps? Jets R Us i believe just sells the 26/26 steel tipped float needle sets. Yours used a Viton tipped needle with wire clip to capture float tang. If that O-ring from jet holder to float bowl is fuel tight when assembled then it is "possible" harmonics of a buzzy machine could be upsetting the shut-off of float needle/seat. Here's what Suzuki calls for now. Part number 13370-48051. Original perhaps could of been steel tipped needle and just superseded? There are several of these on ebay if interested.

The numbers in parentheses are the float needle sizes. In your instance (2.5). I once had a BS38 carb that had 2.0 float needle that ran fine and I could give it WOT for a short period before it would drain the float bowl and it would start sputtering. Changed to the correct size (2.5) and my problems went away

Problem resolved. It turned out the sputtering at top speed was caused by fuel starvation. Replacing the 2.0 viton tip float valve with a 2.8 metal valve got it running right.
I believe the bike origionaly came with a 2.5 metal tip float valve. A PO must of replaced it with the Viton tipped valve.
Check out the deeper flutes on the metal tipped valve. Besides the hole being larger, it appears more fuel can flow around the needle.
