...If I come up against a NLA part that is way too expensive or just not readily available I will try to fabricate it...
along the lines of fabricating an airbox. some of the early kz400s had a fairly simple square airbox that might could be adapted. assuming the carburetor spacing is the same. a block of air filter foam could be stuffed into the box. instead of trying to source the oem air filter. the foam might flow better anyway.

I have a KZ650 DFI project bike I planning on building but because the fuel system equipment is mounted off the battery box where the OEM air box would sit it will require me to fabricate a sheet metal air box.
I planned to use UNI brand foam sheet #BF1 that you can buy in bulk, its free flowing and gasoline resistant.

I have used this foam in the past to replace the filter material on some bread box type air filters.

thanks. that one modified airbox lid posted by bound might be fine. simpler too. ha ha. but w the small 400 airbox was thinking a slab of foam would give him more filter area. since it won't have the oem filter cage or whatever it's called. and if need be for more air flow for his 440, he might could drill a couple of extra holes at the bottom of the box. but since he has the filter housing...
