Stalling/ low power was created by Triryder
Hello, I am new to Kawasaki world but have been a life long Triumph rider. I came across a 1987 KZ305LTD for dirt cheap. 3700 miles on it. Went through the carbs, all new stuff I put in, checked cam timing, spot on. Exhaust is clean and clear. I know there is no ting adjust because the CDI unit has an ignition advance built in. Not sure but everything I've done makes no difference. I'm very mechanically inclined and have worked on many different kinds of antique bikes. Not familiar with this peticular magneto or CDI unit.. anyone with suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it

I acquired an 87 KZ305LTD with 3700 miles on it.   Went through the carbs, replacing floats and put a rebuild kit in it. Cam timing is spot on, new plugs and coils. Will idle fine and free Rev fine but I put it in gear and it has no power. I can get it to go down the road but have to keep the revs way up.  I'm very mechanically inclined, I know magneto and CDI units
is it possible the spark advance portion of the unit has gone bad?  Any ideas?  I'm open to any suggestions!

Yes, the spark advance is built into the IGNITOR (your bike doesn't have a CDI or magneto).  It would be unusual for the ignitor to function at low speed, but not advance the spark at higher rpm.  Those units are usually either functional, or completely dead.

Yes the airbox is installed, exhaust is free and clear. Been through the carbs 10 times.   If I let it idle amd free Rev fine. Soon as it gets a load it sputters and stalls

If it free revs fine, ignition timing is probably ok. You could verify with a timing light.
Verify your running on both cylinders. Remove one plug wire and attach to a grounded plug. Repete with other cylinder.
Did you use jets from a Chinese carb kit? If so, they could be anything, regardless of how they are stamped.

Yeah, hitting on both cylinders. Timing is dead on. I used nothing but kawasaki parts. I'm smart enough to know and have restored many bikes to know, if you don't know, use factory parts!
it's odd. Runs perfect at idle, but I put it in gear and it just falls on its face. No power, have to feather it to keep it running.  It's like soon as it goes in gear and it feels the load, something happens. I thought maybe the CDI unit is not advancing as load is added.  Feels like a car with a timing belt a tooth or 2 off.

Have you checked valve clearances?
Did you install a fuel filter designed for a pressurized fuel system?
Is the petcock performing correctly?
Are the carburetors fully seated in the holders?
Each carb has a vacuum port. One should be connected via a hose the petcock. The one on the other carb should be capped. If either or both are open the mixture will be wretchedly lean.
When you had the carbs apart, did you notice if the slide diaphragms were soft, supple and free of any tears or holes?

I have checked valve clearances, carbs are fully seated in the intake manifolds. The only vacuum ports have screws in them and that's where I hook up the manometer to balance them. There are also 2 black plastic elbows that are bowl vents I gather and the hoses go to the evaporative system.  Tell me more about the vacuum to the petcock? And how it could run lean. That's something I need to look into. Is it applicable to an 87. I made sure the evaporative system is hooked up with no leaks or split hoses

I put it in gear and it just falls on its face.

Does it have kickstand, clutch, and neutral switches? If so, bypass those.
Jumper +12v from battery to coils.
Clean CDI connections and verify it has a good ground.

Done   - Triryder please keep to one thread per issue, it get's frustrating for the guys trying to help you when they are answering the same question on multiple threads.
PS; have you tried running it with the gas cap open (a blocked vent will restrict fuel being delivered to the carbs)
