undefined hi, i have a question about the float level adjustment on my 1980 kz1000. how important, how accurate , do the float levels have to be. are there any problems that can show up if they are not exact. i was told that these needed to be dead on and i was wondering what are some of the problems that come up if they are not. i hope the question makes sense. thanks

Not to sound sarcastic but there is a reason KHI took the time to print a float level procedure in the manual. That being said, to low and you will be lean, and possibly starving the engine. To high and you are rich with a potential fire hazard if you spit fuel out of the carbs onto a hot engine. Best method after a thorough cleaning is a bench setup to sync and set float levels with the clear tube method.

I did something like the setup that Mikaw did, however instead of putting on the bowl every time after an adjustment, use a margarita glass. Wide enough to cover the entire bowl and deep enough to fit the float/jets. Also since it is glass the level and be seen clearly and quickly, gas dumped back into the feed line after float adjustment is made and then measured again, all without a bowl or tube or any other tools.  Just be sure to mount the carbs even and level.

I use the slmjim & Z1BEBE method described in a post in the carburetor section of this site.  It's similar to elfarm's method, but you can do all four carbs with 4 glasses instead of one.

The tolerance in the manual is from memory....plus or minus a half mm.

I am 63.7% sure it should be 2 - 4 mm below the carb body. The cv carbs are 3mm below, + or - 1, which works out the same.

The "robot thing" is to weed out trolls and spammers. I approved your second post so you should be good to go unless you're a robot thing.
Float levels are an important step in tuning.

The float levels can cause all kinds of gremlins. This one had me going until I found the problem.

Float spec on Z1 VM28's is +/- 1mm.  Don't know what it is on KZ1K's.
