Problems with one carburetor... was created by 83LTDshafter
Hi... I am rebuilding this 1983 KZ1100-LTD... I am finding that one carb seems not to be able to adjust the fuel level in the bowl... I have cleaned all passage ways and all seem to be good...
When the fuel enters the bowl and goes above the main jet, the gas is forced through the main jet.. I have swapped the main jet from another carb and it does the same thing... I found that if I open the bowl screws to allow some air passage, it fills perfectly... I have no idea as to where the air bleed is supposed to allow the gas to fill the carb... Does anyone know how this works?
Thanks,
Michael

Hello Michael,
The fuel is not forced through the main jet. Rather it is drawn through the main jet by the vacuum created by the air being drawn through the throat of the carburetor.
I have the same bike but mine is the Spectra. I'll look through my service manual to see if I can post a diagram.
Regards
Bill
Later:
There is no bowl overflow tube but the pilot jet and the needle jet will allow the air to exit the bowl so that the fuel will rise to the proper level, which is 3 mm below the main carb body. Have you tried setting the fuel level using the wet method which is described on page 3-4 of the service manual? If the fuel level is not to specification the 'tang' on the float must be adjusted, page 3-5 of the service manual.

The above two statements seem to contradict each other.
You are either getting too much fuel or not enough and only one will cause the flooding you describe.

If the float height is set correctly the only way the carb will flood through the jet is if either the float valve is sticking , not seating or the float itself is is faulty and not shutting off the fuel once it reaches the required height.

I've uploaded a Factory Service Manual for a KZ1100. It's not for a shaft drive model but it has the very same carburetors as your bike. You can access it by selecting Service Manuals from the Z Information tab on the Main Menu above.

If someone adjusted the tang on too much of an angle the needle can cock sideways and stick. Try adjusting again using the clear tube method. I found two bad needles on my carbs. The spring loaded nipple on the end of the needle would stick causing them to flood. Had me going for a while so I replaced them and it stopped.

Hi,  Thanks for your replies... I am not sure if my reply here goes to all so I will reply to each one...
I have rebuilt these carbs... After writing my post, I found a reply from one viewer for another problem they were having... The air bleed was from the air intake side of the carbs.. Dumb me, plugged these inserts... Not realizing what i was doing... So finally when I cracked the bowl on 3, they filled perfectly... I also forgot to mention that as 3 was overflowing, that also 4 was also overflowing... I know that when I shut down 3 with the tang, 4 fills up nicely... and 3 only had 5mls of fuel in the bowl... when i set the float valve correctly, both 3 and 4 overfilled... I do know that if the air does not empty during filling, it causes air pressure and will case the fuel to go somewhere... so it goes up the main jet out of the carb...
These have been causing me all kinds of trouble thinking that it was the float level problem... Now I found that the problem I think is  because I plugged the air bleed from the carbs...
I wish I had spoken up before... I used to be a motorcycle mechanic years ago, but now I am not sure about this .. so thanks very much for your replies... I will unplug the air bleeds and let you know if my problem is solved...

The reason you didn't see your reply is you are a new member. I deleted your double post. You should be able to post now your second has been approved.
Most carbs have a vent of some kind. I guess in your case it's vented through the air bleed. Let us know how it turns out for you.

Look at reference number 92005B in the diagram at the link below. There is one between carburetors 1 & 2 and another between carburetors 3 & 4. These are the bowl vents. Each one should have a hose attached and the end of the hose must be open so air can go in and out.
