I bought a Carbtune for a bit over $100.00 and it works relatively well, but when I saw the Bohme Gauges that Scirocco has I knew I had to get those. They are expensive, but they work great. You can calibrate the gauges individually which is well worth the price of admission. I had to go through a place in England to get the ones I have, but I am more than happy with them.

These are the gauges I use. They seem to be quite accurate (at least, they are very accurate for comparing the values, I have no idea how accurate the actual values are). I didn't even manage to mess up the calibration by dropping them about 15-20cm onto a wooden floor  The outer casing is pretty flexible though and as Rick said, even if I had messed them up they can be calibrated individually with a small flat head screwdriver.

I think two stroke oil or leftover fork oil are better choices than water. They are easier to see and a bit less watery.

Water is heavier than those and it's the weight that determines how tall the bottles must be to show the difference in vacuum.
It needs to be "watery" to avoid bubbles.

Interesting. I have built a couple of home made rigs just for giggles. I have noticed that if I fart around too long, bubbles will form.

I may flush out the one I still have and try some dyed water.

I am working with my Boehm gauges for over twenty five years and it´s worth the money i paid for it. It´s a precision measuring tool made in Germany that last for ever over your life span. Did over 200´s of carb syncs and engine diagnostics (compression loss/vaccum leaks), buy cheap buy twice, your choice.

I have been poking around online for the Boehm gauges, but no luck yet. I did see that Summit Racing has the electronic version I linked to above for $445.

I finally found the Boehm website. Looks like the four cylinder model is either 220 or 223 Euros, at least in Germany. As best I can figure, the extra 3Euro is for a small fuel bottle to use while synchronizing.

I did not see an option that includes a beautiful German woman to do the work. Maybe Scirocco knows of a different supplier.

+1 for the Morgan carbtune, had mine a while now, started off with analogue ones late 70's, got some mercury ones, then these. have hooked all 4 to 1 vacuum source and have marked the colums as to how far out each one is , only 1 unit out. have found that taking the back off and blowing the unit out with an air line and wiping the rods with paper towel helps. (DO NOT lubricate) you can damp them a bit more with the but on the bottom of the rod to preload the spring.

have put a vid up on Youtube of me using them

that has reminded me to continue the Z500 cleanup project post i started along time ago and forgot to continue, sorry guys

I had a heck of a time finding the Boehm gauges and someone that would ship them to me. I finally found a place in England called Bikers Toolbox that had one set left in stock. The person I dealt with was Ralph and he was very honest about not only how expensive they were but also the shipping to get them to me. I looked on their website and I don't see the Boehm gauges listed anymore but you could try shooting him an email to see if he can get them. They do have the Boehm Vacum Mate Electronic meter listed but it is pretty expensive. In all honesty these gauges work really well and much better than the other tool I was using, but the price may be too much for many people. I liked the fact one can calibrate each individual gauge, but if you get a set read the instructions first. In fact read the instructions a couple of times. If you are not careful you can ruin the gauge(s) via vacum fluctuation. I figured if they were good enough for Scirocco they would be good enough for me and I wasn't disappointed.
