VM24 carb kits

I am chasing a carb kit for a 1981 Z650, it has the VM24's on it, I have been searching for carb kits and they all seem to be for 77/78 650's. Are all the vm24's on the 650's the same ? Any kits better than the others ?

Thanks

Just bought a 81 Z650 for my son, hasn't been on the road at all for well over 5 years, we started it up and it ran on 3 cylinders with fuel pouring out of the 3rd carb overflow, the tank is full of old fuel and there's some very light surface rust in there so it went through the carbs as well, don't want to screw around so we'll rebuild the carbs....

Do as you think best, but if it was mine I definitely would not replace any of the hard pieces with anything from a kit. I've put more than 62,000 miles on my 1977 KZ650, which I bought new way back when, and none of the carb hard parts have ever worn or needed replacing. One other tip - keep each carbs pieces together rather than mixing them between carbs. Ed

Thanks Ed, Its had a 700cc kit put in it 500 miles before it went into storage, the carb kits I've looked at had a variety of jets so I thought it would make sense to use one, I definitely want to change the o rings and gaskets, Carbs will be pulled apart separately. Anyway, back to the question, are the VM24 carbs basically the same ?

I don't know of all the differences, but I know the early VM24 carbs (such as the 1977 carbs) did not have accelerator pumps, but the later ones did.

Also, the 1977 carbs do not have an orifice that has a hose that connects to the petcock. Early petcocks were manual, later ones shut off when vacuum stopped being applied at the carb because the engine was shut off. Ed

Cycleorings.com sells a VM O-ring kit that should have a lot of the rubber parts you need. Z1 Enterprises should have O-rings and gaskets too. That's all I'd replace other than maybe float seats if they are thrashed. And if they are I'd get proper Mikuni parts. You can find them on Amazon for good prices.

All the VM24's are basically the same as regards to the gaskets etc with some slight differences as mentioned above such as jetting from model to model and the accel pump on some.

Were the carburetors rejetted or tuned for the 700 kit? I'd guess you'd need larger main jets, maybe #17 pilot jets & maybe shim the jet needles to raise them.

I haven't checked in a while, but I've never seen carburetor kits for the 81 KZ650-CSR. I just disassembled & cleaned everything, then installed new gaskets & o-rings. There are 2 or 3 different float bowl gaskets, so verify which ones you have before ordering. A metric nitrile o-ring kit from HarborFreight had most of the needed sizes except for the starter plunger o-rings which I got from the dealer, but Z1Enterprises.com may have them.

Check partzilla too they have a pretty decent schematic of the carbs and a lot of the rings and gaskets. Could probably do better on the cost but is of good quality.
