2 simple carb questions was created by Charleslabri
hey all, this one should be easy-- really, i think this might be a solvable carb problem since its not something around running pods on a bored out drag bike in high winds with a custom drilled pilot.

reference for part numbers: www.kawasaki.com/Parts/PartsDiagram/143089/1977/KZ650-C1

1) what does the slotted screw in the needle assembly tune?
part #8 (16046-012)
does it have a name?

2) ive got a vm26 (from what i can tell) from a 77 kz650 and i took it apart and cleaned it today and found that it doesnt have parts #29 and #30 (no p/n listed)
my 80 CSR carbs have the 29 and 30 little nylon washer and brass quarter sized thing, so i was confused-- am i supposed to be missing this on certain carbs?
oddly enough, i have another early model vm26, and i took it apart and it didnt have parts 29 or 30 either.

Part no 8 is to adjust the vacuum draw on that carb allowing you to balance all four carbs.

Z650's came with vm 22 or vm24 depending on geography. Vm 26 came on z900 and z1000 and some suzuki gs models.
Part 29 & 30 are not fitted or required on vm 22, 24 and 26 pre 79.

Parts 5-10, including 8, are for adjusting the carbs to each other. The process is called synchronizing.
I think you are correct about the other parts, some have them and some do not. I suspect that somebody more familiar with those specific carbs will be along to provide a definitive answer.

HA! Warren clearly types faster than I do.

That screw looks like it is to adjust the height of the slide. That is what you adjust when you sync the carbs.

The plate and small washer look like hardware to allow for a shim to adjust the height of the needle (it also affects the height of the slide). Some models probably don't need the shim and some do.

The Kz650 F1 diagram shows them, but the reference numbers are 38 and 39.

EDIT: There is construction in front of my house and I had to go move the car mid-typing. Ha ha! :)

Awesome. Thanks all. I had backed everything out. So looks like I need to get a sync tool and resync!

Before reinstalling the carbs, you will want to bench-synch them. Use a tiny drill bit, or even a straightened paper clip will do. Use it as a feeler guage to set all the slides to the same opening height, using the screw and lock nut on top of each slide ( part 8). This will get them close enough to start and run. Fine tuning is done with your favorite synchronizing tool. The Morgan Carb tune has a passionately loyal following.

The 1977 KZ650 models came with Mikuni VM24SS carbs. Check out the photo below. It shows difference between the VM24 and the VM22 carbs. The VM26 and other carbs do not have the ribs. Ed

@650ed I dont have the orifice, so assuming the vm26.

@texaskz since my bench tool is on the way, they float slides just need to be a common height? then i can tune to a specific vacuum once i have the tool, yeah?

If you have ribs and orifce = vm22
If you have ribs and no orifice = vm24
If you have no ribs or orifce = vm 26 or vm28
Post a picture if unsure.
