Need carburetor advice on my 80 kz1000 was created by Bulletkz
I got my 80 kz1000 ltd up and running.
It seems to run good except for a few things.
It has a random carb caugh at times , it's popping on deceleration and it's running hot.
I know it's lean.
I am waiting on another carburetor synchronize tool, the first one I just bought off amazon only had one working gauge !
The other problem is I don't know much about the bike or what has been done to it.
I know it's not stock .
It has a vance and hines exhaust with no real baffle yet.
K&n filters, electronic stator and the head looks aftermarket.
I drained the carb bowls and it looks very clean.
I don't know what it has for jets.
I was thinking of ordering a jet kit until I saw the cost , can I just order the jets separate?
Should I tear them apart or just synchronize them ?

The first thing I do when bringing back any 35+ year old bike to running condition is to remove the carbs and fully rebuild them. A full tear down, soaking of carb bodies and all the piece parts in carb dip, replacing all the soft parts like O-rings and gaskets, then reassemble and check fuel level using the clear tube method. Oh, and check the carb jets against what came stock (as detailed in the factory service manual) and make sure the jetting is correct (if stock) or at least close if there are pods and a header. Once the bike is up and running I do a carb sync. 40 year old O-rings are evil things and the only way to properly clean carbs is by tearing them down.

Thanks. Do you buy the gaskets ,o rings and jets separate or buy a rebuild kit?
Seems like a waste if I'm not using the stock size jets anyways.

Would suspect obstructed pilot circuits.

First remove, clean and reinstall pilot jets.
Then clean the pilot circuits.

And assure that the pilot jets are stock size.

With properly functioning pilot circuits, usually popping on decel may be reduced or eliminated by slightly enriching the pilot circuit. For example, could turn each pilot air screw 1/8 turn clockwise.

Good Fortune! :)

I use a guitar string or strand from a wire brush to clean the pilot jets. Yes, they're that small.

Thanks for the info.
The parts are soaking now.
I bought a gasket and o-ring kit.
The jets are 17.5 and 20 .
Should I re-assemble with those jets or ?

I think Nessism was suggesting you reuse the jets but replace the soft parts. I would agree with that.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Sorry, I'm not a jetting guy so I can't offer hard advice. For the most part though a good starting point is to keep the stock pilot jets and bump the mains 3 or 4 steps for pods and header. You can also raise the needle a smig.
