According to the factory manual, those two nipples are, indeed, for air vents (at least on U.S. models). If yours are blocked off, then maybe somebody filled them in or your bike is from outside the U.S. I've attached a copy of the page from the manual below. Hope this helps.

I have no idea what bike it is from, looks like a standard kz1000 airbox silencer. I can tell ya if someone plugged them, they did a hell of a job

I've never seen them open. Seems to me if they were hooked up they would create a vacuum in the float bowls. Maybe that's why they were never hooked up.

On the '79 and '80 KZ1000's there were two hoses coming off two of the intake boots and attaching to the airbox.

Edited to add that the above is incorrect. I checked the manual and the hoses came off two carb boots and joined up to the check valve on top of the valve covers.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

GregZ l've never seen one blanked before, all KZ1000's (US and Canadian markets) from late 79 when SMOG laws kicked in big time , have the 2 nipples to take tubes from the EGR Valve located under the tank, other markets got the non SMOG Z models designation, as Dragbike-Mike says most likely for a non SMOG market where KHI were using by then one fits all and the nipples were blanked off, does look factory blanked.

The one l pictured is from a KZ1000D 1980 Z1R.

Regardless of what it is, I am glad they are plugged as I will be using it on a 77 A1 with a correct 77 air box. The silencer itself was attached to a smog air box when it was given to me and I will toss it in the bin
