So my KZ750 blew up only because I was forced to ride it to work when it wasn't ready to be ridden. Thank you to the blind old lady that crashed into my car...

I've been looking for potential new bikes and stumbled upon a nice looking GPz1100, but in the ad the person specified that they swapped out the Fuel Injection for a set of Carburetors.

Why would anyone do this?? Considering the difficulties of carbs and the efficiency of FI, it makes no sense to me. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation for this?

I have no personal experience with it, but it sounds like mostly a money thing. It's cheaper to just slap some carbs on than to try and diagnose and correct.

boy, i can understand it! i have an '83 (which is a bit different from an '82, and a lot different from an '81). the dfi components are pretty well made, but when problems arise, are difficult to diagnose without parts swapping. and a lot (most) of the parts are of unknown condition and 35 years old. mine seems to have had a lot of electrical gremlins that masked other problems and caused me to think about carbs as an easy out.

Actually Matt, it is cheaper to fix the FI that comes on it, rather than to unload a set of carbs you want to sell. Also, the carb conversions are not without problems of their own, and when you are done you have a bastardized GPZ that will more than likely never run properly.
The fuel pump is ~80 bucks on bay, and most everything else can be tested with a multimeter. It's an early Bosch EFI system.

I'd like to line up on one of these "converted" bikes with my old kaw, just to see how well it stacks up to my 99% stock old bike.
