Can I Run These Carbs? Mikuni 2? on KZ750 was created by The-Kolton
I picked up a non-running '77 KZ650 today. Started the tear down and found that I have a '82 750 engine installed already. Unfortunately, I do not have the Keihin 34 carbs. I have what visually looks like the Mikuni VM24, but I'm measuring them out at 26mm on the head flange side. Do I need to use an actual dial indicator and get down into the boar to measure them out accurately?

Looks like 24's. They should work. The CV carbs are more forgiving of elevation changes. Harder to tune with pods though.

They are 24s you measure them right down in the throat, you will need new boots either side of carbs, they will also need rejetting and will tune with pods unlike CV's which won't.

You can install vm26/28s on a KZ650/750 head.
Carb boots for a KZ900/1000 are used.
The bolt holes need to be elongated inward to match the KZ650/750 head.
All carburetors with removable fuel metering components can be 'rejetted' for their application.

If those carbs originally came on a 1977 KZ650 they are 24mm Mikuni VM24SS carbs. If they came on a 1978 KZ650-B2A or D1A model they will be 22mm Mikuni VM22SS carbs. The 22mm carbs have the extra orifice at the 10:00 position of the intake throat as shown below; the 24mm carbs do not have that orifice. Ed

This for 29mm smooth bores too and use a 7/32 round chain saw file to slot them in ward like said .062 per side. The bolts are .218 so it is a perfect match and use a caliber to get the .062 per side and you will have them centered exactly......... I forget(have it wrote down somewhere) but the manifolds are approx .050 to .075 larger but after bolting them on the sealing ring smashes in to match the ports on the 650 head almost perfectly..... I'm mean over half of the surface with in .003 or less and the other half almost perfect like you sanded or ground it that way ....... have done it with 2 sets over the years and both have done this.

Thank you everyone for the great input. It sounds like I'm going to try and make these VM24s work on the 750. I guess I'll just be ordering all the jet kits till I get it figured out.

A couple people commented about using the carb boots for the KZ900/1000 on the 26 and 28 Mikunis, will this also work with these 24s? Whatever is on there right now has a smaller inner diameter than the head, and I can feel a significant lip that will completely ruin the airflow through there.

You really need the right boots, but to be honest you would be better off getting a set of 26mm Mikunis and associated fittings for the 750 motor.
